i think CSL means something like "coupe sport lightweight"
Comes from the 1970s 3.0CSL racecar that dominated. It was a 3.0L Coupe with "Batmobile" appendages. Look up 3.0CSL in any BMW book and you'll see what I mean.

shouldn't the 3.0 CSL be the "first M car". It predates the M1, it was worked on exclusivity by the Motorsport division of BMW, and 400 were released to the general public.

M was just BMW's motorsport division as far as I know. It officially changed from Motorsport to ///M in 96-97 I think.i thought m was a separate company that bmw bought and brought in house?
Get a copy of the november roundel, and you can read all about it.
CSL= Coupe Sport Lightweight.
Also the new Bimmer MAg - the M3 CSL is in there too.
