I want to know what the theoretical top speed of a stock e38 is. I don't care whether or not it is the 8 or 12 cylinder model?

Depends and not the kind you wear, several models are different because of electronic limiting. Some are just worn out and tired.
I think 137 and 155 with out any ECU changes or performance tunes. 137 for the limos and 155 for the '99-'01 shorty sport.

I've done 140
I would have to say try the search button because there are a lot of threads on this topic
V12 performance=326 hp @5000 rpm / 361 lb-ft @ 3900 rpm
Ive done 145 with a bit to go. So at least 160.

At 140 you could outrun most police vehicles.
Yea. But you cant outrun the radio. Ask me how I know.

I stretched the legs on my 97 740i once on the highway when it was empty; took off very well, nice feel of acceleration. When it got just under 130, it stumbled and slowed down so that I thought something broke lol. Speed limiter I later realized. For those of you who are over 130, did you need software modification or did BMW loosen the reins on the limiters in later years?
158 is the euro limiter. 122? American
Dont know the specifics of what cars are limited to what exatly, but a chip removes the Rev limiter.
The 840 and both of my 740is dont stumble at all up to 140+.
So it must be only the ILs that are limited to "127". That number was set by US standards years ago..dont ask me why. Ive not been to 155 yet, which is the other magic number, so I dont know what happens then.
In regards to the police chase...well you know how it is...I was young and dumb. (Now Im older but still dumb) Anyways, once the high speed chase started....well...it was on from there lol. I out ran the 2 cars behind me and lost them, but I didnt realize the chopper was called in. Doh. I smoothly went (slowly) after I lost them into a residental area.
Couple turns...Doh..Cul-de-sac. I stopped. Lights off. Wait.
Couple minutes later, they came round the bend...full speed. Rear ended me...3 car pile-up. lol and they wanted me to pay for it. Lawyer said no way...you ran into him..same rules as a fender bender.
BTW...a hood for a Crown Vic Installed is north of 3k and antifreeze is $75 a gallon from what I remember of the 16k "repair bill". Watch them municipal service guys lol and no. I didnt pay for it. Although....they did try to sneak my state income tax refund away from me several years later. They failed after a swift legal letter.

Who paid for your car?
My insurance. Needless to say they were not happy.
Im sure my Grampa being the VP of said insurance company was the deciding factor.
Lucky me

So far i've gone to 115... havent yet tested it's limits. Hopefully i can get it to 155 when i have no idea this car just makes me lazy, which is good I can stay out of trouble. Now when, I ride the beast Oh..boy that little animal I have taken 160+ with ease, and sure does get me in trouble really fast, but im a little older now so I try to not get to crazy often thank god for the 7
but what can I say when I built that beast, that was the purpose to rip a new asshole to all the rich snobs clowns that had expensive cars thinking they where the shit, and boy plenty of them im pretty sure went back home scratching their heads thinking WTF just happen, I just got rip a new by a POS GTI man their face expressions was PRICELESS!! but back on topic.
No BITCHASSEDNESS!!
I regularly go 200+
KMh
I keep it under 250 since my parachute broke

You have a problem should be good for a few more....
I foolishly had mine up to 145 and still had more to go...but the driver didn't. It was 3:00 in the morning on a return trip from CT thru OK on the Indian Nations Turn Pike.
At that speed it would have been a Federal Offense - I might still be in jail!
