It's called BMW Individual and is available for any BMW model - costs more (and takes longer obviously). Don't know if avail. in the US.

yes its possible, there is a dakar yellow E46 3'er in So Cal and I think I've seen a techno violet E46 3'er run around my town.

So it should be possible on an M3 as well. just costly

    Thumbs up

Depends on how nice BMW is feeling at that time. Some people have done it, others have been rejected. There is a Dakar Yellow '01 M5 running around Miami, FL.
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?

i have a friend who tried to get his 01 mroadster in dakar yellow. he got the dealer to approve the option and he paid the extra $2500 to get it. however, bmwna stepped in and told him no and he couldn't get one that color. he got his $$ back and got the roadster in imola red instead. if others have done it and they were successful then bmwna really needs to define their policy. the us should get the individual option.

I heard that BMW did not allow BMW Individual for MY01 M3's due to high demand and short supply, but heard that it will be available for the upcoming MY02 models.
