    You're assuming it is a fueling issue, I prefer to scan first,
    then attempt to make a determination based on the clues a scan provides,

    My son had something like this this on a 2007 X5 3.0. If it's not relevant, sorry.

    It was a combination of the fuel pressure bleeding off in 5-10 minutes (which we never solved) combined with the fuel pump relay (or maybe the main relay?) being sticky.

    We put a fuel pressure gauge on up front and you could see what was happening with the delayed starts. Every 4-5 starts for no reason there would be no pressure and a whack on the relay would get it going and it would start fine. We knew the pressure shouldn't have been bleeding off like that but with a new relay it's been fine for 4 months.

    The fuel pump is triggered with the ignition key to prime the system - we all know that - but we were surprised to find the door handle triggered the priming also.
