My son had something like this this on a 2007 X5 3.0. If it's not relevant, sorry.
It was a combination of the fuel pressure bleeding off in 5-10 minutes (which we never solved) combined with the fuel pump relay (or maybe the main relay?) being sticky.
We put a fuel pressure gauge on up front and you could see what was happening with the delayed starts. Every 4-5 starts for no reason there would be no pressure and a whack on the relay would get it going and it would start fine. We knew the pressure shouldn't have been bleeding off like that but with a new relay it's been fine for 4 months.
The fuel pump is triggered with the ignition key to prime the system - we all know that - but we were surprised to find the door handle triggered the priming also.
