Just blew an the engine (M62TUB44) in my 2001 E39 5 series. I'm looking to go with a newer low milage replacement engine and was wondering if anyone's dropped in an N62B48 from a E60/61 550i or a N62B44 from a 545 or similar 645, 745.
Any ideas or advice?
Regards, Barry
Forget it, too much hassle and no remarkable benefits. Just search M62 engine and live happy with it
Anyone got any info? I would like to put N62B48 from 4.8IS into my E39.
Me I would like a X5 4.8 motor, mainly because of easy availablility and I hop easy install.
375hp stock is a nice number with nice reground cams, ported heads, pipes etc
Would really make the 540 move ass.
A manual would be a must.

totally different engine management system.
the cheapest way to make 400hp in an e39 is fix up your current one, sell it for fair market value and buy a good condition e39 m5. that story changes if you want more than about 450hp but up to that number the stock car is going to get it done MUCH easier than any kind of later much more complicated bmw engine swap could.
That would be fine in the US but here in Aus a good M5 is a easy $40k.
Not the bargains you guys get.
But I could get a 4.8i and loom cheapish.
But if you have a spare M5 motor and box I would happily take it.
I believe in the idea of N62 into an e39 6speed. That combo is worth the effort and whatever money it takes
Just put a chevy v8 in
I would never do a low class build with a chevy. Why would the work to fit a chevy engine to a bmw be any easier than a Bimmer to a Bimmer. It wouldn't.
