try to get a used one from an E34 or E32 including all the wires and the control unit.
And the gear is usually broken, it rattles because the control unit only switches the gear/motor off by increased ampere. That gear is not very solid and is made out of a kind of weak plastic. So by the frequent overload that gear breaks, also on early E38, E31, and Audi 5000 as well as some Mercedes benz models.
Gear and motor are only available as complete set from the dealer.
But shogun has the solution, the one and only in the world, steel toothed rim ;-)

specially produced again to replace the weak original plastic wheel/toothed gear which usually loses the teeth and then the rear sunblind starts to rattle and is often inoperatable. Used in all E32, E34, E31 and even E38 till 1996 for sure, even some till 1998, also some Benz and Audi 5000 models. Shogun special: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1397812

Jörn: 1 toothed wheel plus re-enforcement bush was sent to Drolshagen, Germany for your Audi V8 built year 1990, same sunblind gear with motor is used on this Audi model as well as in Mercedes Benz of this built period as in our BMW E34, E31 and E32 and some built years of E38, version with hex nut

if you have that grinding/clicking noise that keeps on for about 5 seconds after the blind has come down? And it runs up and down just fine, but makes this horrible sound after it has come down. Thenmost probably my steel toothed wheel will fix it, typical sound when the teeth are gone/damaged on that original weak toothed wheel in the special area where it needs much power. Here a damaged original one http://evansweb.info/files/_images_a...35231115_5.jpg

The problem is that there is no limit switch for the sunroof motor, the motor stops only with a delay time of some seconds when the ampere goes up, and that damages the soft gear. That is why my one is made of steel. That is the larger one of the 2 inside the gear, the smaller one breaks very seldom, but sometimes too.

That is the one with the hexagon nut, not with the torx, see here the difference. The one with the torx was introduced from around 09/1996 in the E38, but it looks they mixed up the stock there, as the old ones were found also in E38 from 1998 sometimes.
Also used in older Mercedes Benz and Audi 5000.Here both shown, this one I have

    Edit: additional upgrade possible:

upon request of E34, E32 and E31 drivers I also can offer from now on as optional extra the bush for the guide pin for the smaller gear part in addition to the large toothed wheel in steel version. Here some pics of the set from various angles, both parts are special made

    http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=...LyDIh4l5k2TGxc

    Reason:
Another problem for damages of the gear is the bush for the guide pin for the smaller gear part, when that bush get's damaged, the gear parts (small and large)touch each other too much.
Since more than 1 year some of my friends were testing this bush with good success together with the steel gear from me.

Repair work is of course at your own risk and ability, if the hole is not drilled very accurate, your repair attempt might not work

Here another good DIY instruction to replace the toothed wheel, from E31, but same procedure for E32, E34 and some Audi and Mercedes Benz models of same built years, they are have the same window motor/gear up to around 1996/8, when the torx version came in the E38, this one has the hex nut, Reparaturstory - Zahnrad Heckrollo wechseln http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...7144517&type=1

Hello Richard, yes, I have stock of the large toothed with as well as the enforcement bush. But before you order, you have to disassemble the gear and see if the toothed wheel is really damaged and the cause of the problem. Could be the toothed wheel, or overload for the motor due to dirt in the complete sunshade mechanics, or the control module is defective. The control module switches off by increased ampere with a delay time. Here is a German instruction to test the module with pictures http://www.e32-schrauber.de/bmw/s-heckrollo.htm
Typical sign of a damage of the toothed wheel in the gear is rattling = slipping of the damaged toothed wheel inside the gear.

    @indiosse: 1 x toothed wheel + enforcement bush shipped to U.K. for E31

I may possibly need one...option spec on the 735iL I bought shows option 415...I'm assuming this is the electric rear blind, and it probably isn't working

no, you do not need one, as yours is a manual operated sunshade
415 = Sunshade for Package Shelf, manual
416 = sunshade for package shelf, electric

Just for info: got another batch toothed wheels (the one with the hexagon nut, not with the torx as used from late 1996 on in E38) + enforcement bushes made and ready for despatch if needed.

send me a PM, have stock of the steel toothed wheel as well as the enforcement bush repair kit. But that does not fit on your E53 X5 3.0d and E39 525d.
My repair kit only fits in all E32, E34, E31 and even E38 till 1996 for sure, even some till 1998, also some Mercedes Benz and Audi 5000 models of same/similar built years.

Dam you can see my post from 2009 wanting to do this! A few months ago I picked up an electric blind from an E32 at the junkyard! Its sitting in my storage unit awaiting my install. I pulled out the harness and switch. Looks like I have the connector inside the drivers rear seat! I will eventually get to this.
