Help needed for new 635 owner / member

I am the new owner of an 85 635csi Euro and am in need of an owners manual and a repair manual. If you have one for sale or know where the best place to go find them please let me know. I will be pulling the head soon to replace a broken rocker and timing chain tensioner guide rail. It also has the original Euro 390 wheels on it. I was wondering what other Bimmer wheels fit these cars. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You could get someone to copy their owners manual until you find an original, I would check ebay for something like this, or online search for car literature specialists. My original manual is in German, and I have an english xerox copy which comes in VERY handy as I know 16 German words. It's kinda rough, so I don't think a copy of my copy would work too well for you.

As far as a repair manual, get the Bentley book for the E28 cars, basically the same mechanicals as the E24 (there is no E24 book). It is referred to often around here, I got mine from Amazon. I would love to have supported a local bookshop, but they didn't have a copy and it would take weeks to order. There is a Haynes E28 manual, but it isn't as thorough.

I put a set of the Chinese made, Alpina replica 16" wheels on my car. Pelican Parts sells them and they claim they are "better than the originals" whatever that means. I got my new set via ebay for around $650 shipped, from a company in Portland (they didn't seem too happy about that price... I think they usually get more). I, however am VERY happy with these wheels, bolted right on with no issues, they look great. In my humble opinion... the 16", black center Alpina wheel is THE look for the E24. 3 piece, 16" BBS is firmly in 2nd place. Both very period cool -- when the 1980s does finally ripen, and it will, you'll want to look "of the period". :-)

Thanks so much for the help. There is a book at a local shop I can pick up tomorrow. I was curiuos though as to what other model BMW wheels fit this particuliar car. If there are any. The side walls are all cracking badly on the Euro sized Michelins. Hope to get the head off this weekend and find whatever else I will need to do.

most bmw wheels will fit, with the exception of e39 wheels, and even those will fit with a hubcentric spacer.

keep the offset around 20, and the rim size at 17 or less. you can go 18, but it will cause your suspension to wear very quickly, unless you do some remedial work.

You can get the owners manual directly from BMW or thru Mobile Traditions. You have the choice of the euro manual in english or german.

The english part # is 01419770301

The german part # is 01409770300

Just to be clear: these are for an 85 euro model with a build date of 9/84 to 9/85 and are currently $20.92 each from Maximillian Importing.

    Wheels

Wheels will fit if they have an offset/ET of 13 to 20 easily.3 series wheels have too large an offset. Style 42s work great just get hubcentic rings as the hub on your e24 is approx. 2 mms smaller than the e39 the 42s were designed for. I would not suggest going over 17 inch when choosing a whhel for your car as the suspension on these cars was designed for a 15.5 approx. and 17s are as far as I have been comfy with. If you give me your address I will send you a copy of the bentley and the haynes manuals on a DVD it comes in handy when I am planning a project. What color is your new bimmer? I can show you style 42s on my red six if you like. I have tried many wheels and settled for 17 style 5s for now but I have had at least 6 different sets on her.pics with 42sother of my cars with other rims

The standard offset is RT 11mm for BBS wheels.

Check here for an explanation or speak to Wolf (the owner)

    http://www.wokke.de/

Depending on your taste if you lower the vehicle for superior handling and look
then you may wish to stick with 16" wheel diameter to keep the tires from rubbing, etc.
Also the larger wheels put a bit of stress on the suspension you don't really need.

You are wise to replace the metric wheels as I believe they require hard to find metric tires. Here's a pic of my set-up.

The wheels are staggered 8" wide rear and 7" in the front (both RT11) which allows for improved rear traction without having massive tires on the front.
BBS RS 005 style 3-piece wheel, which is about as period as you can get for an '83.
(IIRC, Alpina wheels are '85 and on)

Here are all of the wheels BMW made with their data, pics and the cars they came on:

    Welcome !

Unfortunately, with the exception of the Parts Catalogs, most of the references below are for U.S. Spec cars, so you have to watches out for differences, but you can't beat the price!

Here is a cut & paste of some standard information I've gathered, maybe you have already seen it, but if not, it may be of use. In any case, bookmark them:

There are some things you will definitely need:

There are no aftermarket repair manuals for the Six, but it shares the same engine, drivetrain, suspension and many systems with the 5-Series so the Bentley BMW 5-Series '82 to '88 Manual (Green cover, $38 at Amazon.com) works very well. The "Driveablity" and the fuel injection sections alone are worth the price for diagnosing running problems.

ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, aka "wiring diagram"). It is a very good manual, and everyone needs to have this. You really can't work on the car without it. Here is a Site with free downloads of ETM's (PDF files -13 to 20 MB) for various years ('82 to '01) and models of BMW's (3/5/6/7/8/Z):
    http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm

Free Downloadable Factory Workshop Manual (U.S. Spec after '82 - e28 based, including the M6) and a separate Factory Specification Book (you need the Spec book because torques/specs are not included in the Workshop Manual, however, most torques are given in the Bentley manual). The Workshop Manual is not the greatest, but you can't beat the price, and it is invaluable for the things not covered in the Bentley. It basically just lists the steps for replacing parts, very little in the way of Troubleshooting or System Descriptions are included, so it is best to still get the Bentley, and use the Factory Manual for e24 specific things that aren't in the Bentley:
    http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=53625

Online Factory Workshop Manual. Unlike the downloadable Manual above, it also covers the early, e12 based cars - 630 to 633 before '82, as well as, the later cars and the M6. It is also for U.S. Spec. :
    http://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/

Downloadable ZF 4HP-22/24 Automatic Transmission Overhaul Manual It has a fault chart, shows a complete overhaul and has the procedure for the "fix" for the "A" clutch pack:
    http://bmwzone.ro/forums/post-a14824-.html
    __

There is also an Online ETM for an '85. It has much clearer component location pictures then the downloaded ETM's:
    http://www.stormpages.com/countchocula1/bmw/etm002.htm
(The component location listings and pictures at the end of the ETM are invaluable as you find your way around the new car)

A gold mine of articles and how-to's:
    BigCoupeGroup Tech Library ;
Not to be confused with BigCoup.com, don't forget their Tech Articles also.

    An online Vin Decoder:
    http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

And last but not least, there are 3 online parts catalogs:

RealOEM.com, the original and I still find it the fastest to navigate if you are still on dialup:
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do...ies=E24&arch=1

BMWFans, more graphic, so slower for dialup, but if you click on the part number in the right hand column, it will show you all of the other cars the part was used on. Very handy for hunting at the salvage yard:
    http://bmwfans.info/original/E24/Cou/

Maximillian Importing, they will sell you the part, but the price isn't much better then the dealer:
    http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/

    __

For parts, the lowest prices I've found on the net: check all 3 when looking for parts (they also make good references):

    http://www.AutoHausAZ.com

    http://www.Pelicanparts.com

http://www.BavAuto.com (Great Catalog, order it, it's free)
