Recently bought my mom a 330ci automatic and in return I acquired her old 328ci 5spd with 88k on the clock. All stock engine, then I've done a single mass flywheel, M3 clutch kit and threw on some Z4M wheels to make it look more modern and wider meats.
Long story short, but this is my second shot at this kit, so I finally got it...I just want confirmation it was a good deal at $2800 vs the too good to be true $500 kits from XS Power who claim the same 500hp potential - xs-power.com/bmw-turbokits-1.htm
What I got is included in the pics:
*Top mount equal length stainless T4 manifold, has EGT bungs and 2 EGT sensors. Built by John Donovan.
*Precision 6266 CEA Gen1 journal bearing billet turbo, .96 A/R T4, comes with a brand new Turbo Guard filter. In like new condition.
*38mm TiAL wastegate
*50mm TiAL BOV
*4" Thick FMIC 24x12x4
*2.5" Aluminum Intercooler Piping
*Full 4" turbo back exhaust with muffler. Downpipe may require some clearancing.
Needs fuel, RkTunes tune and oil lines then I'll supposedly be 500+hp all day long, which is fine by me on the chance my X5M gets boring :-P Please be kind to the newbie, I'll learn soon enough...just wanted some .02 from you guys.

You'll need a clutch too..
FX stage 3/4 should work for your goals. Besides tune, I'm assuming you'll need a wideband to log afrs as well as a boost gauge. What wastegate spring are you running with that Tial(I think)? To get 500whp, you'll need around 18psi on pump so you may also want to invest in a boost controller as well as a high flow fuel pump. To lower compression, its good to run a CES cutring/spacer combo. I was in your shoes once and was told to do A LOT of research before going turbo. The best advice I ever got. READ, READ, and READ on the forums or sadness will prevail.

M3 clutch might be OK for 6 psi from the 6266 on a 328i.
I'll get a boost gauge and whatever supporting mods I need based on whatever Jordan tells me to buy. At point I'm just getting the kit in the pictures above and then Jordan's OBDII Stage 1 tune setup for $1350 which consists of:
Blow through MAF
60lb OR 80lb High impedance Injector
Wiring harness adapter
Weld On Flange for a 3" pipe
http://www.rktunes.com/tunes/m5x-s5x-obd-i-turbo-tune
As I mentioned above, I don't know the wastegate details, all I know is the kit came off an OBDI converted car pushing over 700hp on a standalone. I know I can't push that much without thicker headgasket, ARP studs, earlier intake manifold and a few other things...but for now I'd be content with whatever HP I end up with before opening up the engine just yet...unless you guys say I need to do X no matter what boost levels I run.
Is running thicker headgasket a necessity? At this point I was just hoping to bolt on the turbo, tune it and enjoy it for a while, then upgrade to make it faster as the power gets slowly more boring to me.
I've started reading so I don't have to be that guy, I'm mostly just curious if you guys think that's a good price for what I've gotten...just want peace of mind I guess or to be honestly told if I paid too much.

The thicker headgasket is necessary if you want more than 400 rwhp, unless you run only E85 gas.
You can do it right once, or wrong a few times. Depends on which you prefer. It is OK to do it wrong a few times. Just takes more time and money.
So I can keep the flywheel, I just need a different clutch disk or disk AND pressure plate?
- - - Updated - - -
I'm not trying to be lazy, I've just always had the impression these motors were bullet proof and loved boost, so I was just going along the lines of thinking like 400hp is OK on stock everything with a tune, 500hp with head studs, 600hp with thicker gaskets and intake manifold, 700hp after converting to E85, so on and so on. Stock engine is only 200hp, so if bolting on the turbo and tune only gets me to like 300-350hp and is still safe, I'll be fine with that...for a bit :-) but yes, eventually I wanna keep pushing it more, maybe not just right away...once again unless I just have to.

Still looking for opinions on the price of that kit overall...good, should have paid less, etc

I'm sure I'll want more...I just wanna get the kit on and going, run it SAFELY for a bit and then I'll start upgrading as it gets boring.
550hp from the X5M got boring after a few months, now I'm supposed to be 650hp with tune and catless downpipes, which has also gotten boring, so now I'm looking into extra tuning, M5 headers and Pure Stage 1/2 clipped turbos with meth.

The X5M is dull in part because it is 5000 lbs and AWD and automatic trans. All you get to do is steer. 650 rwhp in a 3500 lb E36 with 5 speed manual and RWD is much more entertaining.
I know, I just like it's sleeper abilities, it'll be funner to drive to Bimmerfest this year vs the E53 I took last year, it's a great DD overall as it's fast for what it is...it's apples and oranges to the 328 though.

If it helps at all I got my CES gt35r turbo kit with full exhaust for $2k. Then I sold my Dinan supercharger for $2k. No brainer for me.
You will need the higher stage grip force clutch/flywheel combo. They can be had for ~$400. Don't bother with the stock m3 junk.
I went with CES cut-ring and no spacer. If you want more than 10 psi, go with the spacer to lower the compression.

Yes EMC intercooler. Tial v44 wastegate. Came with AA 42mm bov which I sold and purchased a used genuine Tial Q for just a bit more.
No motor mount but I purchased a used one for $50.
Mine also used the Porsche Maf which I sold for a HPX blow thru Maf.
It was pretty much as bolt on as a used kit gets.

Found the original ad with more details on it, seems set on price and it doesn't sound like the injectors, Bosch, etc were included in this price...$3200 shipped is where he's at and says he'll throw in an OBDI manifold that I'd have to retap the vacuum port.

You read correctly. These engines do love boost. But you didn't read enough. You have to prepare them for it. You wouldn't play pro football without a helmet. Don't boost your engine without protecting it first. You can run about 8lbs of boost on a stock head gasket. That's the bottom line. Any more than that and you run the risk of those stretch bolts allowing the head to lift or the gasket blowing out. That 20 year old head gasket won't be your best friend for very long. Do it the right way the first time. Get a cut ring head gasket and head studs instead of head bolts. Use a copper spacer to lower compression or install lower compression pistons. If you're going to run e85 all the time you don't need the spacer. Read some build threads.
That stock m3 clutch will last a couple weeks. Mine did. Problem is it will never grip correctly. Even if it's new. The engine will overpower it and you'll have problems with it slipping. Mine did. Minimum you need is f1 stage 3. If you have plans to go way over 500 give serious consideration to a twin disk.
That's a fair price for that kit. It's not the deal if the century but it's fair. By the time you're done you'll be around $5000. You still have some missing pieces. They add up,fast.
Bleed your cooling system http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1709482The ULTIMATE OEM Alarm/Keyless thread http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1792200
I'd just assumed:
- I'd get the pieces in the pics above, bolt them on, buy some oil feed adapters, get the tune from RK Tunes (which includes injectors and MAF) then I'd be off and running at like a 500hp ballpark.
- If I wanted more power, then I'd have to get bigger injectors, upgrade the fuel pumps, maybe start looking into OBDI manifold, headgasket and ARP studs
Seems I'm WAY off..seller is saying I need a surge tank with dual Bosch 044's, custom fuel lines to said tankx headgasket and ARP right away, etc etc. I'm not looking to track the car, drifitng or break landspeed records...I just wanna keep it a simple daily with some more power to screw around on freeway onramps, walk some inspecting faster car on the highway, etc. Reading what comes with the RK Tunes kit he sells makes it sound simply bolt, tune and go but the turbo seller (and you guys to a point) is making it sound like it's this HUGE endeavour.
