Just curious ! which one is better ? ...as a torque handling not mileage per gallon
Both can handle a ton of power... The Getrag is harder to get in the US, probably easy in Romania.

Getrag 250 5 speed is rather weak, gernade around 300 HP.
6 Speed is a ZF tranny which is well known for taking abuse, 600+ HP.
P-Cars since the 80's and other high horsepower cars such as the dodge Viper use the ZF trannys for this very reason.
The Getrag 6 speed that he's talking about is well known to take 800+ whp. It's not the weak Getrag that was in the 325.

I have been looking into the same basic question, and so far I have come up with the following. For the 2 main transmissions put into the E36 I found that there is a 5 speed (S5D 320Z) and a 6 speed (Getrag S6S 420G). The 6 speed is generally put in the higher output European cars. The number in the designation is the amount of input torque the transmission is rated for. So the ZF is rated for 320 N-m of input torque (235 ft-lb) and the Getrag for 420 N-m. I have been finding pros and cons for both transmissions. The Getrag has shorter gears in 1-3 the same for 4 and 5 and a .83:1 (overdrive) for 6. Good for highway cruising? I have seen a few projects that have coupled the 6 speed Getrag with a 2.93:1 LSD for top speeds upwards 210 mph. I still haven't been able to fully answer this question myself, but hope this helps. Also there are rebuild kits available for the ZF, but I haven't found any for the Getrag.
^^No, you don't.
Some e36 m3's came with the getrag. Only late model (1998-99) got the better ZF tranny.
I would imagine that the 6 speed Getrag out of the e46 m3 would be a better trans then all of them. HPF is using it up to almost 1000hp at the flywheel.
That is what is going in my car in a month.

Thank you very much for the inputs
So what i have right now.... GETRAG 6 SPEED + 2.79 DIFF looks like it's an excellent choice for 600+ whp
i love misinformation on the interwebs.
IIRC, the Getrag 6 speed is nearly identical to the one used in the Supra TT. Should be practically invincible if that's true. I've seen insane power on 6 spd Supras without tranny issues.

The Getrag 420 boxes are similar to the MKIV Supra V160's (also made by Getrag) which have proven to hold over 1000rwhp and used in a 7.99 1/4 mile pass.
turbos like low gears... maybe thats what he is doing being that most people in this thread are talking about maxing out transmissions etc.
Yeah,
ummm. .... turbos and people.
i had a vehicle with 4.10s and Getrag 6 speed w/s50b32. 1st gear is pointless. mid 3s gearing would be more efficient in 1st, 2nd, etc.
