Lifter Tick Solution? - Perhaps...

You know i had a bad lifter tick back in the day. But once i redid my head and cleaned all my lifters nothing came out of any of them. No gunk no nothing. When it came do to it i never did find out why they went away but i didnt get them after the rebuild

Yes, I've tried some of what you did, and the rest I plan on giving a shot. Either that, or I'll replace them.. my car needs a valve cover gasket pretty badly, so maybe I'll find the money when I'm in there.

Of course it's oil starvation, every time I go autocrossing I put an extra quart in, but depending on how hard you take the car, you will get a bit of starvation. Its quite common, that's why turner and VAC motorsports have baffles for the oil pan, but even those cannot do the job as well. I was going to do it when I did my oil pan and oil pump nut, but I've read it wasn't too helpful.

Have you thought about an Accusump? http://www.accusump.com/ I'd like to get one for my car, just for the fact that it'll give you oil pressure on startup, thus preventing wear.

Haha I wonder if we could get a group buy going for lifters.. I bet a LOT of the E36 guys would be interested. I haven't seen many of them that are still whisper quiet.

I am going to bring this thread to the top again.

I have a 318ti with a M50 non vanos in it. It has ticked since the day I dropped the motor in. Very badly under no load once the engine has warmed up, no tick at all when it is cold. It doesn't matter if its after high rpm runs or just daily driving in traffic at low rpm, always ticking, pretty loud I can hear it over my exhaust. I popped the cams and lifters out, starting to get scoring across 3 lifters and cam trays over cyl 4 and the rear lifter on cyl 3. Cams, lifters and cam trays were spotless, not a spec of grime or sludge on them I could not believe it.

The only thing I can think of is i swapped the oil pan and pickup since the motor came out of a 5 series. I put the 3 series pickup and the 3 series oil pan but did not put the gasket on the pickup to the oil pump. My only last thought on this lifter tick is maybe once the oil heats up the pump is not able to maintain sufficient oil pressure as some oil leaks out of the pickup. When I run 15w40 the tick is much less than a 10w40 or 5w30.

Any Ideas??

92 325i here, same problem after running hard, almost sounds like an exhaust manifold leak but I've checked and that is not the case.

I did find this. It explains that this is a common problem across most BMW motors and there is a lifter bleeding process to get trapped air out of the system. I was told by another E36 owner that he was able to solve a ticking lifter by picking out a bunch of gunk clogging the oil fill port. Haven't tried it yet.
