Help! 3-5 sec. hesitation at traffic light

This site was great when I had my X-5. Please help me with my E39. While at a traffic light I had a 3-5 sec. hesitation the return to normal idle. That evening when leaving the office upon start up a very slight rough idle then fine. Any ideas.

Whats the exact problem? Regular, predictable, rough idle? If so I would look at VANOS.

If its unpredictable rough idle I would look towards the ICV, it may be on its way out... that sounds like it may be your problem
