ehh you should have just gotten a new headunit!
I pulled out my CD player and it has a 11/04 build , but s/w 42. Does this mean I will need a new CD player?
I just completed this exact muddy4dsm process with my 2002 530i. Replaced CD53 SW#42 HW#50 with a Mar03 SW#40 HW#41 unit and the BMW Aux cable. The result worked exactly as described. The Aux Mode appeared on the unit immediately and I was able to input Sirius radio and Android phone. But success was brief and now the Aux mode no longer appears. Is there any reason the Aux mode would stop displaying? Now only radio and CD (again)...so bummed, because this was working and now it isn't
Ugh. I also completed the installation, had an awesome working AUX input for two weeks. I then left my car sit for a week and today when I started it up AUX was missing. Nothing that I know of changed between then and now. I pulled out the MID and CD player, unplugged and replugged all connections with the same result. Has anyone found a solution to this yet?
Is there any other threads about this? i want to buy the RetroFit cable but im not clear on what cd unit i must have. Mine is a CD53 (Alpine Made in Japan) With Manufacturing from 02 December 1W and SW/NO 50 HW/NO 45. Does this work with this adapter?

Thanks!
I've been having problems with the quizdel unit. It's supposed to work with pre 09/2002 versions but for some reason I keep losing the aux as well. It worked at first then quit. But if I unplug and plug back in the module that goes in the trunk. It'll work for a bit. But anyone who wants to retrofit a pre 09/2002. Check out quizdel. It might work for you. Wish I could figure out what the issue is. Seems like you guys have been having the same issue as me

Yes, Quidzel was very promising, but like you said its been having problems. I had to end up returning my unit for a refund after a long back and forth with Sam. I have not seen any updates from him regarding this issue yet.
THX for the feedback on Quidzel. This really helps alot of us lurkers on here who's ready to pull the trigger.
Yeah I've been back and forth with him as well. Great customer service btw. He's willing to give me a refund as well. But I don't want to give up on it just yet. It's a pain but if I unplug the module in the trunk. Then plug it back in it works for a bit. Wish Sam or I knew what causes it to not recognize it after time. I haven't been able to really drive the car lately. (Waiting for parts for cooling issues). But should be all squared away by next week. You can always purchase it from quizdel and give it a shot. Who knows? It may work for you. He's figured a way for it to work. Even if it is a short period for some. May work indefinitely for the next guy. If not then return it for a refund. It's still less expensive/aggravating having to find/purchase head units and such

Hey guys, I just created a DIY video on installing the aux kit into a 2005 X5 without navigation. It's the same kit for the E39 and E53, with slightly different location of mounting the jack. Here's the link for those searching in the future, hope it helps:

Been putting some thought into this aux retrofit but just wanted to confirm a few things.. I'm soo over carrying/burning CDs
My car is a 2001-07-12 build with DSP. So as long as I get the BMW aux kit and a cd player that has a build date of Sept. 2002 and later and of course with the correct s/f 40 or 50, it SHOULD work?
Did some research and saw that few people were having problems getting the retrofit to work the said requirements with no solutions mentioned.. so I just wanted to clarify before I salvage the parts.
Has no one mentioned the Audiovox Mediabridge? iPod cable included for direct connection plus comes with an auxiliary input. The included cables connect to the CD changer wiring in the trunk. I used one of these for a few weeks after my old Dice unit stopped working, but it turned out to be a bad cable so the Dice unit is back in service, as is my iPod. Love the sound quality as well as the steering wheels controls.

That's not completely accurate. I purchased an in dash CD player last summer and then started seeing the same thing you mentioned about the Aux not working because of the date. This unit was a July 02 build, SW50, HW45.
I then purchased another CD from a member here that had a later build date which I installed, and worked just fine.
Being curious I tried the July 02 CD player, the Aux worked on this unit too. It's now on eBay.
Wait so u tried the July 02 cd player with the aux kit and it didnt work. Then tried a later build, it worked. Then tried the July 02 again and it worked? Sorry if i read it wrong.. So a build before Sept. 2002 is plausible since you got the aux kit working..
Did you use the BMW aux kit or something else @JimLev?
I ordered AUX cable from eBay and plugged it right into my CD-Player, it doesn't show AUX as is, but wile you have iPhone plugged it shows AUX RIGHT AWAY, it plays music very well, but as soon as I plug my phone to the charger it makes AUX to be gone, unplugging phone from the charger makes AUX appears on the screen again, anyone have similar issue with aux input?
My car is 10/02

Your current situation is not your final destination
I recently got a 2002 525i e39 BMW, i have done some research in installing an aux and i even purchased the 82110149390 piece in hopes to get aux. my radio is a april of 2001, but it is sw number 50 and is a part number 65. i followed the instructions for those who hace a 6 cd changer in the trunk like mine does. I could not get the aux feature and was not sure if it was my radio or if I installed it wrong. someone please help
I ended up going with this:

Works perfectly.
Okay... Here's what I'm being lead to believe. The software version doesn't quite matter. What matters is the manufacturing date.
There's a bit on the sticker where it says "MANUFACTURED:" and then gives a date, month, and then a "1W" or "AP."
It appears as though none of the units with "AP" marked on them were a software version 42, so they appear to be from newer vehicles (at least from what I've found.) Also, units with software version 40 come on "1W" units, but don't appear to have AUX input capabilities.
Simply put, you need a unit with "AP" on it and not "1W." Software version doesn't matter.
I can back this up, too. The original post has a "AP" unit going in, and it worked.
This video from E39Source also shows him replacing a software version 50 "1W" unit with a SV 40 "AP" unit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_GL-gqBUXM

Not okay I have these two. The older one was in my car, and i though of getting the aux cord. Didn't work... So bought another CD player (newer) and it still didn't work. And when i checked the scheme it appeared, that the aux cord had wrong side connection B instead of C, and also wrong pin connections, i mean the wires were wrong placed on the aux cord. So after I repinned the aux wires it appeared, that BOTH of CD players go for AUX. So the "only AP" version is busted, also the 2002/09 production date also busted because they both work.

Edit : So if AUX cord has 3 wires, is there a difference which ones i connect to which pin?? Because it works in any way i connect them. I mean the AUX righ AUX left AUX ground. Though it looks like its not that loud, when max volume. But the QUALITY IS Very good. Unless you are super anal about the sound system you have(if you go for super expensive heavy duty system ), mines HiFi.
