I'd be willing to come down one morning and we could do both of ours! I saw the list and its getting pretty long for the people renting it. Looks like its going to be on the west coast for awhile. Maybe we can get a couple other Touring guys and split the cost of the rental and we could all help and do them together!

If the tool is on the west coast perhaps it can pass through Denver on it's way east? Please let me know as I definitely need to take care of this on my wagon!

There is only ONE of these tools in all of the USA that is being made available for DIYers. It's made in England where tourings are more common. It costs about $550 to get it here to the US including the shipping. While not the original purchaser, Jase007 is the current owner of the tool who is making it available for rent. More info in this thread:

Recommend reading the thread backwards (It's REAL long).

    Question

    Howdy all!

I have a 2003 530i Touring in Australia that has done some significant mileage for it's age. It's done 130,000 miles now, and I am wondering what the symptoms are if these bushes are worn. Or should I just get them replaced regardless?

    Thanks all!

Bad subframe bushings have many symptoms. The most evident symptom that starts the quest for most to find out what is wrong is a harsh ride from the rear suspension, especially when both wheels go over the same road imperfection such as a raised section of pavement. Other symptoms include a quivering feeling when going over bumps, rear suspension hop on turns and bumps. You also may hear a banging from floor of the car when going over severe bumps (this is the subframe hitting the floor pan).

As these usually start failing around 60K miles, yours are likely way past done.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm... I think it wouldn't hurt to get the bushes replaced. Trouble is, I need that special tool, and I'm in Australia.

I got to find someone who has this tool Down Under....

Just for additional information. The tool (and bushings) are SPECIFIC to the touring, the ones for the sedan will not work.

I have a 140k miles 528 sedan on which I plan to overhaul the suspension. I've had this car for nearly 10yrs and plan to keep it for RE. Any info on rear subframe bushings DIY for the sedan? I'd rather do this now than later as even on the I6 I'm pretty sure the rear subframes bushings are not lifetime

I've seen no comments on folks replacing the Sedan subframe bushings as the rear subassembly is different than the Tours. I know there is a tool, just not anyone commenting on using it.

By the way, how would one with certainty confirm the integrity of the subframe bushings? Seems advisable for this seemingly tricky task.

Have not heard of anyone needed to replace the bushings in a sedan. In the touring they are an integral part of the suspension, in the sedan they are not. For the touring you can jackup the rear suspension by the diff, and remove the bushing mounting cup to inspect the bushing.

Excellent DIY. Trying to buy an e39 540it currently. Would this be a disqualifying repair if I had to take a newly purchased touring to the shop to have this repair done.

Not sure what you're asking. Disqualifying from the point of an extended warrenty basis?

Ah, yes, this is a cool and easy DIY. You'd be disqualified...

Looking for Jase007 - Touring subframe bushing affair

I am new to forum but have read all the touring subframe bushing posts. I am in need of that repair and hopefully Jase007 will reply and I can arrange the specific tool for the job. I also have the "SELFLEVEL SUSP INACT" light on intermittently and wondering if both of these fixes are wisely done together? What are my problem options based on that code?

    Virginia 2002 540it, 80k miles...
    thanks,

    thanks,
Other than possibly removal of the tires, believe there really is nothing common about replacing the subframe bushings and fixing the leveling system. Most common leveling system problems are caused by an air leak, an air spring leak, a problem with the pump (is underneath the spare tire) or one of the level sensors is broken (which often will happen if you had rear suspnstion work done and the sensor was not disconnected before the work started).

Does the car seem to sag overnight on one side then try to level out after the car is started? If so that's a leak or leaking air spring.

Send me a PM or hit me up on the thread Kbsilver posted above if you are interested in renting the tool.

Don't want to mess up BlackBMWs DIY thread (which is a good one).

    Thanks.
