No problem; I've been mapping out all the ASCII characters that the display can produce, and I must say there's quite a few "unused" symbols inside there!

I first used Python to run an autonomous, deep sea robot. It's a hoot for embedded system work.
Good job on the display. I'd offer to help out but I'm overloaded with projects at the moment. Still, I can probably manage some quick design and code reviews, the latter if it's portable C code, as I have been using AVR and ARM parts the last few years.

wow.....your time and perserverance is appreciated. I wish all car audio systems (especially NAV) were open-source. :-) Then I could make my NAV system trully unique. :-)

Here's a little video showing off the various ASCII characters the display is capable of:

Do you have any idea as to how this might be eventually an option for people without a bunch of specialized equipment? An Arduino or something? A PnP kit or minimal soldering?
I have c/c++ and python programming experience and would be interested in messing with it if there was an in-car solution.

Yes, there are several options planned:
1) Complete plans and info for someone willing and able to hack their own interface.
2) Partial kit with a PC board only
3) Full kit with PC board and all components
4) "Turn around" service where you can send in your OBC as a "core" and get one back with the OpenOBC board installed and tested.
5) Possibly selling complete units ready to go with no core needed.
This all depends on a working prototype of course. I'd also need to become a forum sponsor to start promoting/selling these things thru the forums.
Here's some more of what's possible (these are mockups only at this point):

Are you just taking over the screen or interfacing with the computer inside the OBC? I'd want to maintain all normal button functionality as well as gain additional features.
Glove Box Sagging! Ha Ha Ha
sign me up for the "turn around" service.

Very cool!!! Lol glove box sagging; you might start a new craze d:

Well that takes care of the hardest part. I declare the obc officially open.
What's the max refresh rate you've been able to do?
Right now it's really slow (1-2 seconds to update) because I have the OBC running at about 1/4 speed in order to nail down the interface.
Also the python code I'm using to drive it isn't super-fast.
Next step is to get it working using a PIC mcu.
You got yours working too? Awesome!!!!

Give me some feedback on this, guys. I was sitting here thinking about tackling the buttons when I began to wonder about changing the labels on them. I've never done anything like that before, but this seems like a case where it would be well worth the effort. I for one don't have much experience with stencils and paint, but there has to be someone here who's familiar with a good way to get factory looking results. Any input?
