great to see people are actually registering on te forum just because they want one
Got all the mechanical stuff sorted out (I hope) and started on the layout again. Gonna try to get some work done on it today. It shouldn't take more than a solid day or two of work now, but I rarely get any of those.

I'll try to remember to get some photos next time I'm working on the firmware, which might be while I'm waiting for the boards to be fabricated. It's not much to look at yet though - just some of the factory functions plus one or two tiny extras like coolant temperature and RPM.
Sorry I haven't had any updates, I sold my e36. Is there any qualified developers that want to take over my board? I think I'm gonna move onto a Android platform for communications in an e46 environment.

Make sure you stay in touch with regard to your new project. I also have tentative plans at some unknown point in the future for producing a next-generation openobc platform that's capable of running android. I want to get away from being e36-specific and have something that's BMW-specific instead. Probably something to replace iDrive while also bringing iDrive features to older models like the e36. I don't know how far in the future that is for me but it would be neat if our paths crossed again.
Boards like this are mostly done by hand, yes. The program you speak of is called an autorouter and is included in virtually all PCB layout software, but its usefulness is fairly limited. There's a lot more to laying out a board than just connecting point A to point B repeatedly until you're done and there's an inherent problem in getting an autorouter to take all these extras into consideration. For more information, google "why do autorouters suck". Like I said though, it's not that they suck - it's just that you don't encounter a case where it's appropriate to use one as often as you'd like. PCB design is a complex thing and so far no one has written software that consistently does it better than a human. It will happen; it just hasn't happened yet.
I got some work done on the layout today. One more day should do it.

(for the uninitiated: the red and blue traces are done; the yellow lines show what still needs connecting)
Almost there!
All done:

Now I just need to sit on it for a few days to see what I've forgotten to do. I'll probably order the boards next week.
How many will you order at first? we have 16 people interested, probably more when everything is touchable-matter. Plus yourself.
I'm going to have to play it by ear. Since so many people are wanting one I went ahead and gambled that I didn't goof the design and ordered 10 boards instead of the minimum 5 to get the PCB cost down, but the other parts are still expensive enough that I can't just buy them all at once and pray I don't lose all that money permanently. I don't want to take anyone's money before I have tangible things to ship either, so I'll have to do the first boards in small batches of a few at a time and use the incoming funds to buy more parts. I can get parts overnight very cheaply so this isn't as time-consuming as it sounds. Hopefully after doing the first 10 this way I'll be able to do them in full batches of 10 and keep them continually stocked for anyone who wants one like I've started doing with the Tiny ADS interface.
By the way, the boards should arrive over the weekend.
Okay all of my friends and I have bought an e30 or switched to an e46. There has to be some kind of developer that is interested in this OBC? I will include instructions on how to flash it via Linux as well as a cable for flashing. I don't want this project to suffer from this board revision (which is great), you can still develop software revisions that can easily be adjusted to board adjustments.
Unless benemorius you can provide a development environment I cannot continue development, which I would be happy to do.

Hi Benemorius
I am also an E36 enthusiast which did this CD changer emulator with Bluetooth : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTuh845BfBg
Are you interested to interface it with your design? Or make only one board? Also will be open source once is in. This interface works fine with CD43 form E36/E46.
I used a DSP from VLSI guys.
Congrats for open OBC!
It's really nice to see Benemorius keeping this project alive!
My available time to work on this project has dropped to nil, and I sold my E36 and got an E46 M3 a couple months back.
I started playing around with coding and such on my new car and have some ideas for some new projects that would span both the E36 and E46 cars.
Keep up the good work!

I haven't posted in this thread in awhile, but I'd just like to thank everyone working towards making this a reality. You're never going to be fully and properly compensated for your effort and knowledge and its great that you're willing to give back to the community like this. I'm really excited for even just the basic functionality--I'm getting tired of having an obdII reader and my phone's bluetooth on all the time to get a proper readout of my e36's coolant temp.
The boards are in.

I'm not sure if I'll have time to assemble one today or not but they look great so far.
Hi! I think I forgot to reply to an email from you a while back. Sorry about that. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your E46. I've come to realize that the newer chassis have much more electronic goodness to fool around with, beginning mostly after the E36. I'm pretty determined to keep my E36 around long enough to finish a couple of projects with it but after that I think I want to see how much fun can be had with all the stuff they crammed into the E90.

Ok so obviously I couldn't resist. It's two in the morning but I had to build one.

I put some firmware on it and got a hello world out of it, but it now occurs to me that I don't have an OBC to put it in. I should have had one of those on the way while I was waiting for boards.
Awesome progress -- the new boards look fantastic!
Yes I did email you... that's OK it happens a lot to me also. I get busy and things get buried.
Speaking of OBC's, PM me your address and I'll drop a couple in the mail. It's the least I can do to help out!
The E46 and above all have a CAN bus (500+kbps) with all sorts of messages flying all over the place. All the modules are very chatty and lots of info flows on that bus! I'm excited to tap in and see what I can find.
