Yes and they'd virtually never need replacing either.
Using RGB LEDs we can "mix" any color we want, similar to how a monitor mixes Red, Green, and Blue pixels to form any number of colors.

Internally there are separate "light pipes" for the main OBC and the clock.
We could even have the clock be a different color than the main OBC, or have the display change color to reflect the importance of the message, etc.

Example: Imagine the "External temp" display being in a color appropriate to the outside temperature, or a radar detector message blinking in alternating red/yellow.

    The possibilities are endless!

Any intention to support CAN? You could then feed in a signal from a datalogger or ECU. Would be hot to have "boost" show up on an OBC.

OBC is going to mean a lot more pretty soon. I think there will be a lot more people wanting to upgrade to the 18-Button OBC. hehe
Boost would be nice to have let alone to see on the OBC. I like the datalogger idea. I would be able to connect my PDA to it.

    Sure, why not... :P

Do you have any links to documentation on the CAN bus and its protocols/connectors/etc?

Is this the "Computer Data Lines" I see referenced in the OBC connector and E36 wiring diagrams?

According to the schematics, there is a TX/RX pair going to all the modules (including the OBC) and to the diagnostic connector.

So i think this is a CAN pair, and for the openOBC project we are considering a CAN capable microcontroller.

I understand you can plug some device to the diagnostic connector to reprogram the boost mode right? If so we need the info on this protocol. Can someone supply this info? If not, then we would have to hack that. Anyone has that boost device ?

It would definetly be neat to use the openOBC to toggle my M3 from econo to boost....

The CAN protocol is usually pretty universal. If you look at digital dash displays like the Stack and AIM dashes that support CAN, they usually have a break down. They also display all the ECUs they support. There are some instances of ECU that use a modified CAN format but not many.

If you grab a USB-CAN adapter you can prob hyperterm or something similar and find out what it's outputting and make sense of it

Ok... worst case scenario we install the openOBC and operate the performance programmer while the openOBC is in some "listener mode", relaying everything to the external com/usb port....

    I'm sold, let's do it!

Along those lines, does anyone know the specific codes for ZKE/OBC/DME that pertain to the E36? I'm curious to see what functions can be performed and what sensors can be read over this bus.

    Thanks!

BTW, Mefis and I have teamed up to get this project off the ground -- stay tuned for some exciting updates very soon!

Yes, but I need a prototype unit. Anybody wants so sell me a 18 button OBC unit? Broken one is ok as long as screen/buttons are somewhat functional

    Hi all!

Here is where we stand on the product selection. These are all the major devices we see included so far. Digital I/O and analog I/O are included in the MCU. The CAN can not be built in, so we are supporting it on a separate chip. The GPS must have external antenna because inside the OBC case there is too much shielding.

I will not dare to give a budget at this point, but hopefully it will stay bellow 300...the GSM is the most expensive piece, and is totally optional.

    Any comments?

This sounds like a great project, why not set up a paypal account in case anyone wants to donate to the project? I'd surely throw in $10 for the cause.

You should also add a configurable output for a chime or "dummy" light for important or dangerous sensor readings.

That will be very easy since there's already 2 outputs from the OBC -> Chime module for the 37F warning and "Memo" functions.

We could also embed a tiny piezo speaker onboard if there's room.
We'll have to see after we get the board layout done.

I will be unsoldering the X1070 and X1071 connectors from my test OBC this weekend and soldering them to some perfboard so I can test further and get a feel for the board layout.

Do you know if most E36s have oil temp and oil pressure built in? If not can you suggest after aftermarket/bosch sensors or has someone done this?
    The same for fuel pressure?

Need some datasheet to design the analog inputs for these things.

    Thanks!

The only temp sensors the E36 has are coolant, outside air, and transmission. Oil pressure is a simple on/off switch for detecting low pressure.

It would be really cool if we could find a screw-in replacement for the oil pressure 'switch' that was analog and then have the openOBC drive the low pressure signal to the cluster.
That way you could get oil temp reading plus still retain the "dummy" light in the dash, without having to tap another sensor into the oil flow.

Fuel pressure and oil temperature would need external transducers to read the values.

i'm pretty certain the e36 doesn't have an oil temp sensor of any type and the pressure is a simple too low switch, as you've mentioned.

i had just figured i would have to add the sensor for that kind of function, i just didn't know if there was a way for this "upgraded" obc to possibly read it. i figured there was, but didn't know the details!

any e36 i've ever known to have oil temp and a real pressure gauge had run aftermarket gauges. i know there's some kits for this; i'll see if i can drum up a link or two....
