I would love to have the stock look of the open source obc. I have a sudgestion as well, not sure if anymore mentioned it but, what about the ability of preseting values and using the obc's speaker to chime when that preset it reached. Such as boost level >14psi, once it hits 15 the memo chime goes off.
Buy the gauges IMO. Even if this ever works, guages are much easier to read ----especially in a turbo build.

I haven't landed anything full-time, but my contract work is picking up, which is good. Bad for side projects like this, but good for paying the bills.

Rest assured although this project has been idle for several months, I'm determined to make it a reality and I won't let it die!

Wow, how did I miss this thread! Subscribed! Not a coder, but was once Nasa Certified in Soldering. (used to be an Electronics Tech with Western Digital in the 80's, then Electro-Optical Laser R&D Tech with Rockwell working on Star Wars stuff, before I got into Boeing)

Hope something works out for you m2pc!!!

No, not forgotten -- I still have the spare OBC hooked up to my test harness in the garage; just been so crazy busy with work I barely have time to maintain my E36, let alone finish my projects like openOBC and the LED tail retrofit.

The projects won't die, but are slow moving ATM.

Ok everyone, I landed a real job now, so it's time to really begin implementing this project. I was thinking that a project of this magnitude will require a bit more horsepower than a simple MCU like a PIC, etc.

Let's start looking into small embedded Linux SBC's. Here's a few I'm considering:
    http://foxg20.acmesystems.it/doku.php?id=:start
    http://www.embeddedplanet.com/products/ep852.asp
    http://www.embeddedplanet.com/products/ep405pc.asp

Using a real Linux-enabled SBC will allow the most flexibility. We can then program the openOBC using C++, Python, Perl, etc.

Ideally, a CF card would allow easy upgrading/feature selection. Many SBC's have Ethernet ports allowing for online updates via the web.

    What do you guys think?

i like the idea of moving to a embedded board. This is still a new area for me, but i have been looking at the beagle board for a different project. It might be a good fit for this one as well. It uses TI's omap processor.

    http://beagleboard.org/

there are various 3rd party implementations of this as well. I am in particular looking at this one.
    http://www.igep-platform.com/index.p...d=46&Itemid=55

for about $215 you get Ethernet, 512meg ram & flash, bluetooth, and wifi. It also has a onboard microsd slot. Basically a full blown PC thats very small.

If you ever wanted the ability to do full blown nav, mp3s...etc they have had success connecting these to a PSP display with voltage level shifters.

anyways these boards are probably overkill for this project, but i think they have some appealing qualities.

Glad to hear you are back in the full time working world and have time for this project again. I am a EE but not an expert embedded programmer. It seems that if you are considering more powerful platforms, you should consider the nano and pico ITX PC compatible motherboards that are out there. VIA has several different models with a good amount of peripheral component capability built in. I am certain that they will run Linux. The limiting factor of those boards is probably the lack of built in analog to digital conversion but that might be offset by easier connectivity to the outside world. A/D boards with USB connectivity are not hard to find. I don't know what they cost today. I bought one several years ago for about $150. The VIA Artigo pico ITX board was around $200 the last time I looked.

I've seen a lot of info on the web about the Nano and Pico-ITX sized SBC's, but my only concern is the footprint. Remember, this has to fit inside the existing OBC housing to be really useful IMHO.

I'll do some measuring and check the web for boards that fit.

Wow I wasn't aware these could run Linux... If the size is small enough, this just may work.

A CF slot is also a big plus.... MP3s lol, we could program a custom sound for alarms, etc.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

mp3 playback is a very attractive feature i think. the linux software to make that work is basically already written. Its called MPD (music player daemon). I runs as a service on the linux machine and is capable of playing nearly any format (non DRM). It supports a wide range of clients for the selection of songs. I personally use the software on my media PC with a client from my iphone. There are also some clients that work with LCDs...etc.

After considerable research, I'm leaning toward this GumStix module:
    http://www.gumstix.com/store/catalog...roducts_id=226

Cost is $199 USD, includes WiFi 802.11g, Bluetooth, 6 A/D inputs, GPIO, audio in/out, and SDCard slot. Runs Linux.

    Size is only 0.66 x 2.3 inches.

Coupled with this board, you get through-hole connectivity:
    http://www.gumstix.com/store/catalog...roducts_id=239

    What do you guys think?

that board seems like a good solution for this project. The 6 a/d channels is a very appealing since the board i listed only has 2. I assume we will eventually have to design a PCB for this project. This module would just plug into that, allowing the PCB design to be much simpler. There appears to be no onboard audio with that particular board. I might be overlooking it though. a USB sound card is a possibility, but adds to the overall cost of the project. Thoughts?

Yeah I liked the high number of A/D, PWM, and GPIO channels available with this board.
There's no "traditional" 1/8" audio jacks on the board, but it does list "Headset" and "Microphone" in the features list:

    on-board microSD card slot
    - I2C, PWM lines (6), A/D (6), 1-wire, UART, SPI, Camera in, Extra MMC lines.
    - Headset, Microphone, backup battery,
    - USB OTG signals, USB HS Host

Wow, I just noticed there's also a "camera in"... this might make for some interesting security/race cam recording possibilities for the OpenOBC!

UPDATE: This board seems like a perfect fit for the OBC case:
    http://www.gumstix.com/store/catalog...roducts_id=230

Breaks out audio to standard jacks, includes USB, Ethernet, and HDMI/DVI connectors.
Plus it has a row of 0.1" through-holes we can use to mount a header to connect to the OBC with.

I'm ordering this stuff now to get the ball rolling. I'll post back results ASAP.

Just got my Gumstix order in yesterday!

The board on the left is the Gumstix CPU module (really is the size of a stick of gum!).
Linux OS is loaded on the microSDHC card which fits into a slot on the CPU module.

On the bottom right is the expansion board that the CPU plugs into.
Left to right on the bottom edge is: +5V in, USB OTG (usb client port), audio in, audio out, HDMI out, USB host port, and 10/100 Ethernet jack.

Lots of I/O is broken out on the top of that board, with A/D, PWM, and GPIO all available on easy-to-use 0.1" centers.

    More to come!
