PART 1: E46 Power Folding Mirror Upgrade Complete Pictorial Guide

This is a reference guide for all E46 3 Series BMWs up to production date 3/2003. It will set you up with everything you need and need to know for upgrading your US spec OEM Manual Folding Mirror whether you haveMemory or Non-Memory mirrors/seat function to UK spec OEM Memory or Non-Memory Power Folding Mirrors. I can also be used as a parts guide for those upgrading to aftermarket, M3-spec, or other types of power folding mirrors made for E46 BMWs up to 3/2003.

In Post 3/2003 all your Mirrors (regardless of whether they are power, manual, non-memory or memory) use ribbon connectors but should connect the same way and will need to be programmed at the dealership.

This DIY will only focus on pre 3/2003 E46 BMWs that use the 12 or 6 pin connectors off the mirrors.
The cost of this DIY on Parts bought at the dealership alone should be between $615 (if your E46 has manual fold memory mirrors and you want power fold memory mirrors) and $815 (if your E46 has manual fold non-memory mirrors and you want power fold memory mirrors). Parts can also be bought for way cheaper on the UK eBay website or found at other UK based parts websites.

I have ordered my parts this afternoon and when they come in and the weather gets warm enough to go outside and spend a few hours on the car I will complete this DIY and post up PART 2 which will describe the process of installing the parts.

TO USE THIS DIY: Simply read the three statements below and find the best statement that describes your condition (or car) and what you want to upgrade to and use the the parts numbers and picture guides below for a visual reference.

Statement A. If my pre 3/2003 E46 came with memory and 12 pin memory manual folding mirrors and Non-Power Folding Mirror Control Switch w/ MEMORY (turquiose back), then my E46 already has the R and L Memory Module inside the doors that supports the Power Folding motor. So to get MEMORY Power Folding all I need are;
1. R and L MEMORY Power Folding Mirror Units; BMW PARTS# 51167003437 for $282.35 and 51167003440 for $282.35

2. European Power Folding Mirror Control Switch w/ MEMORY (purple back) BMW PARTS # 61316901383 for $53.57


Statement B. If my pre 3/2003 E46 did NOT come with memory and ONLY came with the 6 pin NON-MEMORY manual folding mirrors and NON-MEMORY, Non-Power Folding, Mirror Control Switch (black back), then my E46 does not have a Memory Module. So to get NON-MEMORY Power Folding I would need;
1. R and L NON-MEMORY Power Folding Units; BMW PARTS #51168245129 for $271.19 and 51168245132 for $271.19
2. NON-MEMORY European Power Folding Mirror Control Switch (yellow back) BMW PARTS# 61318373732 for $53.57
3. The ECU (Power Folding Mirror) Control Module that goes behind the glovebox; BMW PARTS# 61358376506 for $64.45
4. AND I would have to get this ECU Control Module programmed at the dealership.

Statement C. If my pre 3/2003 E46 did NOT come with memory and ONLY came with the 6 pin NON-MEMORY manual folding mirrors and NON-MEMORY, Non-Power Folding, Mirror Control Switch (black back), then my E46 does not have a Memory Module. So to get MEMORY Power Folding I would need;
1. R and L MEMORY Power Folding Units BMW PARTS# 51167003437 for $282.35 and 51167003440 for $282.35

2. European Power Folding Mirror Control Switch w/ MEMORY (purple back) BMW PARTS # 61316901383 for $53.57

3. The R and L MEMORY Modules that goes inside the doors; BMW PARTS# 61356913364 for $99x2 or for post 9/2002 up to 3/2003 PARTS# 61356916054 for $99x1module
4. AND I would have to get the MEMORY Modules programmed at the dealership.

HERE ARE SOME PICTURES FOR REFERENCE:

If your pre-3/2003 E46 BMW has NO Memory and Manual Folding Mirrors. This is ALL you will find on your car for Mirror Control;



And If you want to upgrade your Non-Memory/Manual Folding Mirrors to Non-Memory/Power Folding Mirrors then you need to buy Non-Memory type/Power Folding Mirrors and these things then you will have to get your car programmed at the dealership;

But if you want to upgrade your Non-Memory/Manual Folding Mirrors to Memory Power Folding Mirrors then you need to buy the Memory Power Folding Mirrors (even if they are Aftermarket M3-Spec) and these things and you may need do a 6 pin to 12 pin conversion and/or get your car programmed at the dealership;

So lets begin at the beginning.

Before work this morning I decided to open some cavities up to see what I have in my car before ordering my parts.
As you all know I have 2001 330i Sedan wth Memory and Manual Folding Mirrors and I intend to upgrade to the power folding mirrors.

My Car:

My Door Panel Mirror Adjust Switch (just pry the top and botton end with a butter knife and it easily pops off):



The underside of the switch revealing that it is indeed the blue/turquiose color that it should be to indicate I have a manual folding memory set up:


So that means I have the correct switch and also the in-door Mirror Memory Modules already so I would only need to buy the Power Fold Switch and the R and L power Fold Mirror Units.

Hey buddy,
Uhm, the replacement mirror is not going to be the entire mirror unit, just the inner black trim part and the motor. I have to reuse the outer shell, glass and outer black trim of my existing mirror.
