I'm going to use the euro egs and have no problem with that i just figured that it would be a good idea to save the euro programming and possibly be able to help others upgrade without all the hassle i have since mine is a pre 9/97 with the older style egs. As in euro mode you mean rewrite the egs etc to tell the car its a euro and then reprogram? what do you use to change the window up with remote?

NCS and then recode DME and EGS with the new SW via Progman.

Then put the car back in US mode and you will be flying!

Have a technical question, don't send me a PM but post it on the board so others can benefit from it!

    Yes they do!
You need to change it with NCS and then flash with Progman as stated before

I just want your auto closing mirrors. Where did you get that module again? I want to retrofit the remote autoclosing feature. That should have been stock.

Man I want to do the paddle shifters...

If I might ask you experts, what parts would I need in order to do the Steptronic retrofit?

Wow so all we need is the module? No mirror modifying?

    None. Got a sportster.
europeanautosource.com has the above-mentioned module. it does say something about it being for cars with factory installed power folding mirrors. this e-stuff i gotta wonder about. it's all pretty expensive for what i would imagine could be programmed into ibus for those clever enough to do it... the e-shift interested me a while back, but i'd way rather have the flappy paddles.

Thumbs up Resurecting an old thread to life again

    Hi Bro Richard a.k.a Kawabmw7,

First and foremost i would like to thank you for having the courage and confidence in carrying out this very OEM Retrofit in your car. Congratulations to all the skills!!!

My name is Mithran and i'm from Malaysia. I drive a 1997 E39 523i. It came with factory fitted electric seats and manual steering column.

My recently acquired a facelift steering, airbag and slipring. My intention is to fit them on my car. Unfortunately it will not fit plug & play and i will have to change out my entire steering column to a facelift one.

I plan to install an electric steering column just like yours. In fact i've found one that comes complete with all the wire harness and ignition housing together. I've already booked it waiting for pick-up.

I've read through your DIY on the steering column swap on bimmerboard and cardomain and i'm absolutely amazed at your knowledge and skills in doing the swap. WELL DONE BRO!!!

I want to retain my existing key and therefore i will have to swap the plates key barrel just like what you did.

I was really hoping you could guide me in my swap progress. With the thorough write-up and pictures that you have shared with us all, i know understand the complete progress and what i should do.

Are you using the dual stage airbag or single stage airbag? The airbag that i have acquired is dual stage. Did it throw any SRS airbag light when you did the swap since yours previously is a single stage airbag?

There is one part when comes to wiring that i'm not sure of and hoping you could enlighten me.

    1) You did mention that you need to change some wires of wipers and turn signal.

Could you kindly advise what wires are they and how do i go about changing the wires.

    2) I believe i have to change my LCM too. What part number of the LCM must i look for?

"Next step was changing the LCM (light control modul), the LCM from the facelift is different. Turn signal in a pre facelift runs over 2 wires to the LCM, in a facelift it goes over 1 wire and it is in a different place on the LCM. Same is voor high beam, so I changed the pins to the right place and it all works fine now. I even have ‘follow me home’ now."

Could you kindly show me what are the pin locations that need to be swapped?

Those are it at the moment. Really appreciate your guidance in helping me sort out my swap.

Thanks very much once again Richard.

    Cheers,
    Mithran

At first, thanks for the compliments.

It is a long time ago since I did this, so I must think good to answer your questions.

The airbag I used is the dual stage, only connect the second stage and there will be no airbag light.

LCM you need is from facelift, after 3-99.

Pin 14 on the blue plug must be placed to pin 30 and pin 44 must placed to pin 50. That's it.

Here you can find the wiring online.

I'm curious, I have a 99 which is a facelift model but has a 11/98 build date so it has the single stage airbag. Seems like if I do this with the dual stage, I'm only wiring it for the second stage. My LCM is of the facelift for sure especially since I have the folding mirrors. If I were to attempt this mod, do I have to do anything with the wiring and/or ignition to retain my key as I'm right in the transitional year.

    Very nice mods!

how did you remove the steering wheel? Do you need a puller??

I think I need to replace my clockspring.

You still have to change the LCM because cars before 3-99 have the pre facelift steering column.

No puller needed. Just remove the airbag, then the 16 mm bolt and pull the wheel off.

Make sure the battery is disconnected. You don't want to trigger the airbag light.

I've added power folding mirrors from an 01 and I changed the module on the door, isn't that the LCM or am I confusing that with something else?

Would I still have to do the key mod if I want to retain my original key?

The module on the door is not the LCM. The LCM is the one that is located behind the driver's side kick panel. (next to your accelerator pedal).

When i fitted my M5 folding mirrors, i had to replace the driver's side window controller (it comes with the folding button on it) and the passenger' side door control module. This module is the black box fitted behind the passenger's door. There's a specific part number you have to look out for the module. This module enables the passenger side M5 mirror to fold.

If you intend to swap to the dual stage steering wheel, then yes you will have to do the key barrel mod since you will now have to use the facelifted ignition housing. The key barrel on the facelift and pre-facelift is different as shown in the pictures posted by Richard.

Thanks for the reply Richard. I studied the wds and i understood the wiring diagram now.

I understand that pre-facelift cars had the MFL-CM located separately underneath the steering column. However on the facelift, the MFL-CM is incorporated into the right button pad of facelifted steering wheel.

Did you have to reroute anything in regards to MFL-CM since now we are using the facelifted steering wheel?

Ooops....sorry Richard, my mistake...mine is 7/97...so the above can be ignored.

So the MFL-CM is already incorporated to the steering wheel. So no issue on that.

Regarding the airbag connection, there are 2 connectors. One is black and the other is green. Do we connect the black-to-black or green-to-green? Which one will be the 2nd stage?

    Cheers.

Yellow/black and yellow/brown are the wires for second stage. Don't know which connector it is.

The yellow/black and yellow/brown is the one with the black connector. Thanks.

Some say the black connector is the 1st stage while the green connector is 2nd stage.
