    Thumbs up E39 540i Turbo

    Hi all,

I have been thinking about this for a while, and I was wondering if you guys being more knowledgable would be able to impart some on me.

Basically I want to twin turbo by 1997 E39 540i Auto. First question is - is this feasible?

Second, what will I need to do to the engines internals to strengthen them up (if anything). I'm not looking for a huge gain - probably around 80-100 all in if possible.

I looked at the supercharging option, but thats something I would need to save my pennys up for to purchase a DINAN one, but turbos I can do over time.

What are your thoughts on it?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

e39 m5 ftw... you'll spend so much $$ trying to do this, then tune it right, and it'll still be half as reliable as a ///M5.

Really? I highly doubt a well built tuned turbo 540 will be half as reliable as the e39 M5 given the m5's track record for terrible carbon buildup even when driven like its suppose to.

    Hi Ryan,

The Dinan supercharger kit is massively overpriced, and is not the only supercharging option out there for the e39 540i. If you google search "VF-Engineering" or "ESS Tunning", you will find two other very good supercharging kits, all of which use the Vortech supercharger unit, it's the same blower in all kits, just packaged by different people.

Anyways, VFs kit is $6k, and ESSs is only slightly more, both being more affordable than Dinan. I'd pick up one of these, because a comprehensive turbo set-up on the 540i is not only less documented, but would end up costing more I believe.....

My 540 makes over 400 rwhp on 6psi. Runs like it did before. VF kit is good to go. I bolted it on myself in a week after work just a few hours a day. Started right up. BIG difference. Had to get a Quaife due to the one tire fire. Went with 3.46 final drive, another HUGE difference.

Now I am adding an intercooler, 10 psi, cams (only on non VANOS... mine is a 98 with 50k miles), dual exhaust... HELP i can't stop. O yea, get the UUC V12 Kevlar clutch and lighter fly wheel that helps a ton, plus the added 150 hp eats the OEM clutch and the rear tires.

Seems every time I launch the car there is a big cloud of smoke and screaming from the tires, go figure. I did KW coil overs, sway bars, Dinan Monoballs, All new control arms and the rest of the suspension (all heavy duty from a 750 i think) EvoSport Pulleys, SuperSprint Headers, 100 cell metal cats, dual 3" to MagnaFlow 14612 (I think) and well a ton more like Alcantara interior, LED Angel Eyes, Xenon, LED tail lights.. 370mm M5 steering wheel. Dinan strut tower braces front and rear, UUC short shifter Gen 3 (smooth), OZ SuperLeggera III 19x9.5 fr 19x10.5 rear, OMG I am a fool. More money then brains.

Must say it is a FAST car, cleans up on everything. Give 600cc sport bikes a big shock. Final hp numbers will be out soon since the cams, bigger boost and water to air cooler. looking for 550 at the wheels.

Everyone says why did I not buy an M5 well in short, repairs are 1/2, VANOS is expensive WHEN is fails, and well my Financial Advisor aka Wife was not down with the M5. I raced 1000cc Sport Bikes and have a tendency to drive slidways. 540 is lighter, easy to mod, and surprises everyone especially M5's old and new. Yea E60 M5's, Must be the 400 pound foot of torque.

I have seen mad mods on 150k plus cars that run fine. This is a car that you can mod, beat on, and put 5 people in and 3 set of clubs.

I have had 17 BMW's and the 540 E39 is my Favorite. Well at least I tell myself that, I am past the point of no return.

Sounds like an awesome machine! What intercooler setup are you going with? Do you already have a tuner for the cam setup? I have a Dinan 3.45 LSD.. Similar ratio to yours. You must really haul ass. Just had the valve cover gaskets done today, along with new plugs. Would love to see some videos of your beast. Thanks..

thats only the first year of e39m5 production.
any year after that you just need a stronget clutch and new mafs. those are the main weak points of the e39m5.

I will post the shop and contact info after EVERYTHING works for a few thousand miles, a few track days, and some Palomar Mountain Runs.

Just a little fun, my wife was not aware of the most recent mods, you know how it is "honey the cars is just getting some maintenance". so with the intercooler, cams, and valves etc I laid into the fun peddle and you should have seen her face and mine. The tires came loose in 3rd, even with the Quaife 3.46 and 275's out back. She said it is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY faster then some Superman ride at an amusement park.
