Looking to do the M5 swap in my 540i6 cant find a straight answer using the search

    Ok i have a 1998 540i6 with 3.15 gears. i already swapped the diff once from a 540iA with 3.15

I did a search and i found one that says if you have a 540i6 its a bolt in conversion. i did not think that was the case i thought you still needed the M5 diff and drive shaft and half shafts.

thanks guys please let me know i found a good price on an M5 diff

It is almost a bolt in

You need an M5 drive shaft. And you need to swap the flanges from your 540i diff onto your m5 diff so that you can use your existing half shafts.

These posts have a bunch of info.

You need the driveshaft and 750 flanges and the diff. I'm looking to do the same.

Hey applecran, when i was searching the forums i found that you need to have the flanges machined to make the Clips work.

Or is that for the 540iA flanges??

are the 540i6 flanges differenet so there just plug and play????

750 seems like a good price, I paid about 2K for a rebuilt diff and re-balanced drive shaft. They also provided the flanges and swaped them in.

Because they did it i'm not sure about the machining.

I did this a few months ago, great mod! I got the diff (2000 34,000 miles), drive shaft (2000 64,000) and half shafts (2000 64,000) for $988 shipped from carpart.com. If I had to do it again, I would NOT remove and install the half shafts, that took way too long. I would get the flanges mentioned above and just swap those out, no brainer IMO. Swapping the flanges is as easy as prying the old one out with a big screw driver, and popping the new ones in. As a matter of fact, when the diff arrived, it was missing a flange, and carpart.com even credited me the cost of the missing flange($75). Good guys.

car-part.com. They will work with you on the pricing, and I'm sure they have one with less than 100K on it.

Why do all this when you can just get a legit m5? haha sorry but this doesn't make much sense to me.

I guess your right it would make much more sense to sell my car for 6 or 7 grand and then dish out 20k for an M5.

    13k difference for a m5

or like 1k for the diff and parts to swap

I think ill just spend the 13k makes much more sense
