Well it took me about 5 hours to complete the removal of the mechanical fan and installation of and electrical fan and a thermostat unit. Purchased a Hayden 16in ele fan p/n 3700 and a Torqflo adjustable ele fan thermostat p/n 733647 from Twilightzone all for about 90 bucks. Installation was not to bad had to remove the fan shroud and cut it up with a jig saw and reuse most of it to hold the overflow tank and the hoses at the bottom but now I have plenty of room to change water pump and or belts without having to removing anything else. The car feels better on acceleration and the fan is pretty quiet and when it’s running it moves a lot of heat. Installation was basic ran the hot lead to the terminal by the intake ran the ignition wire under the passenger filter into the ele box mounted the fan to radiator and the sending unit to the outside of the radiator by the inlet water hose not to hard to swap, if possible I would have reused more of the fan shroud cause you can just trim it down in the center and install the ele fan under the shroud pictures will make it easy to see and understand the only thing left is to clean it up a little by hiding the wires. I have always been a fan of ele fans they are more efficient and give you more room under the hood and if you set the thermostat correctly it will only run when need it. I think it was a good move and worth the money and time.
Thanks,
Part 2
Didn’t like the way the expansion tank was sitting and having to use the original fan shroud so I called Zionsville and ordered an expansion tank Type 14. The quality of their tank is excellent and it fits very well and cleans up the engine bay see the 3 new pictures I added.
Thanks,

Congrats on the install.
You only need 15 posts to add photos so you should be able to post them.
How many posts do I need before I can....?
Once I have the required number of posts, how do I post a photo?

Nice! Congrats on a sucCessful DIY. Please post some pics of the set up. Especially the tap into the ignition.
Please post more info about the temp sensor install!
I have the 16" high performance electric fan and the PWM controller.
I am worried about connecting the temp controller...
I am just waiting to have enough money to get the EMP Stewart WP.
Thanks!

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …
Jason5driver look at pic #4 the black wire running up is for the sending unit and will start the fan at about 185 to 190 F.

Thanks 6shot!
It's really hard to see in that pict..
Got any better pictures?
Thanks for the reply!
Do you have any pictures of the E36 temp switch on your thermostat?
How does it screw in?
Which is better?;
1. the PWM temp sensor

2. or the E36 M3 temp sensor???
Thank you!

Great work 6shot! Might be too early to answer this question, but have you seen any improvemnet in fuel economy?
Jason5driver the sending unit for the fan is the metal rod going into the radiator fins with the double black wire going up just to the right of the wires you are talking about causing no damage to the fins or radiator.
tinyjohnson too early to answer this question on fuel economy, but will update after a few tanks.
The temp probe in the radiator fins is an interesting solution. Especially when paired with an adjustable temp switch to compesate for the aluminum
Update added new pics to 1 st post.
good stuff now make a diy so other can follow ur footsteps
Tank was 200 but its very nice and easy to mount and it looks much better.

Wow!
It looks fa-nominal!
I have seen the clear exp. tanks too.
Do you get temp readings from your OBC with the electric fan?
Thanks!

6 Shot, that is awesome - thank you. I also removed my mechanical fan and hacked up my fan shroud. Purists would think its ghetto, but it is such a relief to not have that mechanical fan under there ready to cause destruction! I am in Cali near the beach and haven't yet added any supplementary electric fan.
Based your post I might go zionsville on the tanks as that is the last pieve of crap plastic that I am not sure of the age.
Is it made to bolt on to the radiator with no fan shroud or did you do some custom adaptation??

Jason5driver on the temp reading everything so far is good the needle stays in the middle fan does not run all time so what I am doing is running a small light off the fan wires to the inside so that I know when the fan is running, but no temp issues yet. No temp readings from the OBC I am not sure what you are asking with the OBC.
peakay it does not mount directly to the stock radiator I bought a piece of aluminum and cut a hole for the fan with a jig saw and on the side I mounted the tank on the piece of aluminum, the piece is big enough to cover the fins from top to bottom and on the sides its about 2 inch’s short on ea side and I mounted it to the four holes two on top and two on the bottom of the radiator.
The car feels better on acceleration and the fan is quieter than the aux fan, on the fuel mileage I got about an extra 35 miles on the last full tank I will check it on the next full tank, all I need now is a nut for the pump.

peakay its not that bad just a little time and some money and now that u have the stock fan out of the way its very easy to work in that area. I will be taking a 4k round trip over the holidays and I will post mileage and temps.
