    Fuel pump retaining ring

Anyone ever replaced their fuel pump/gauge sender without the BMW special tool? How did you remove & tighten the retaining ring? I can't budge the thing.

I had to fabricate a tool out of a metal handle I had laying around, cause that ring is a bitch to remove. Randy did the same iirc although his tool looked better.

Can you describe what you made? Or, of course, a picture is worth a thousand words ...

I do it all the time, very easy.

Put a hammer on one of the teeth and just hammer it.

It was a simple utility handle like this. I filed a bit at the two ends so they fit into the grooves of the ring. It was still a bitch, but at least I could grip it.

Piece of wood and a hammer. It doesn't damage it. You don't have to hit really hard, it's just the shock that loosens it.

I just used a piece of aluminum against the rib or tooth of the ring and tapped with a hammer. It released rather easily.

Edit: there's a spec on tightening that ring, which is what motivated me to fabricate a tool I coulde put a torque-wrench on.

That's a little tricky to fake, unless you have a freshly calibrated hammer...

The hammer trick didn't work for me. Seemed like the impact was getting absorbed by the whole tank moving just a bit. I'll keep at it. Thanks for the homemade tool ideas!

The tightening torque value escapes me at the moment (and too lazy to look it up for you), but I remember it being surprisingly high. You'd have to really wail on it with a hammer to get it loose, but how would you know how hard to hit it to tighten it back up?

Given what you'd risk by having that joint fail, I hope that you're planning on torqueing it to spec. Hate to think you'd lose a race

It's 41 ft-lbs. To be honest I don't torque everything to spec ... probably not good, but sometimes I'm lazy, especially when it involves the need to make special tools :-)

But we'll see how it goes. I haven't had a chance to get back out to the garage to wail on the thing with a hammer again anyway.

Well, I'm giving up. I can't budge it to save my life.

The car will be going to a shop later this winter so I'll leave it for them. Or maybe I should just destroy the thing and buy a new one, it's less than $10.
