I needed 2 new rear tires for my 97' 540i6. I have the Alpina's 17x9.5 which had 255/40R17 so i decided to go a little bigger with 275/40R17. Problem is that when my car goes over a pot hole or even a slight dip in the road they seem to be rubbing... Any ideas what i can do about this?? Or do i just have to get a small set of tires???
Any input is Appreciated....
avoid the bumps
But even taking an On-ramp @ 50MPH makes the driver side rub... Maybe i'm too fat??? I do Weigh 290!!
Are they rubbing on the lip of the fender or your inner fender liner? If its the lip you gotta roll the fenders. If its the liner you can install M5 fender liners that have more clearance. The other option is to buy 265x40x17's
Tires are too tall.
Dial in more negative camber and buy correct sized tires next time.
Garrett
+1 too tall should have gotten a 35 or 30. 40 is too much. Start rollin them fenders if you want to save those pretty new tires
Guys, he doesn't need a 35 or 30 series tire. Remember, he's on 17's here!
+1
35 or 30 series will be wayyy too small! I run 35 series on my 19's
I've got 20 inch rims on my 98 528i and very very minimal rubbage, only if im stupid. I haven't had a car full of "heavy" people however. I am at 175
here are my tires

thats the only reason im keeping them, is because they are different. i know that not very many(or any) other ppl has them. I would rather have some other BMW rims but then im just another face in the crowd.
I'll admit, they rims are a little much if you know what i mean.
Yes, my photoshopped wheels John
now that he mentions it.. .the rear one does look quite photshopped haha
Putting things where they don't belong.
god that car looks like an ebay special.
275's could work I'm sure, but he still hasn't said where the tires are rubbing, plus we don't know the offsets of his rear wheels, which is the most important.
yeah stock sport suspension..
I have no idea what the offse's are, i bought the car with these wheels. Its rubbing on the outside edge, like where the surface and side-wall meet.
Rear are 17x9.5 and front are 17x8 which by the way have a 215/45R17 tires that look way over stretched!!!
You're stuck. You most likely can't return the tires. You have three options a). get tires that fit properly b). roll the rear fenders combined with c). adjust the camber of the rear tires to tuck them in further.
Choose from above.

D) Do the Y and rear resonator delete and run without the spare tire. See if the lighter tail end does the trick.
Wrong size on the fronts too. Stock is 235x40x17.
You are correct sir, .1" taller to be exact. I still think he's got the correct series tire, but a 265 would have worked better. The offset of his rear wheels are probably a tad bit too aggressive to run the 275 without rolling the fenders.
