Wow, you got right to work with the car! Are you doing the painting yourself?
Trying to teach him as much as possible. Let him see how much work and how expensive it is. Hoping he will appreciate it more.

What kind of setup are you going to use? I just built a paint booth and now I am trying to gather all of the materials. I'll be using PPG paints.

Are you keeping the zinnebar ?sp? bryan?
(this goes for that crazy vert too)
if not then don't use run-of-the-mill paint, splurge and buy some house of kolor.

this is what all the custom rods and show cars use. AMAZING pigments and simply the richest paint out there.... oh and don't forget to put on a few extra coats of clear and color sand the clear.
Color sanding makes the difference between great paint and best of show paint.
personally for the M3 I'd go with some type of mile-deep red candy apple and on the vert prolly a deep (esitrol-ish) blue with a purple pearl clear... yummy yummy

1. Previous owner put the 3 post m-tech wheel on it.
2. Im going to spray it in a friends body shop. Probobly going to use Spies Hecker or Duponts Supreme line in Base/Clear.
3. I was a paint instructor for about 13 years. I have sprayed
everything for long periods of time and found that I prefer these two lines the best for overall appearance quality.
4. I LOVE House of Kolor and have sprayed a few tons of custom
Harleys and show cars. Even had a few in magazines. It really isnt what im looking for on this car. We are going just straight black base coat clear coat and plan on wet sanding and buffing it.
I dont recommend putting the extra coats of clear on a car as it really doesnt help, it actually can hurt the quality of a finished product unless you put the recommended 3 coats let it dry, wet sand it and apply another 3 coats. Then you will get one hell of a deep, long lasting finish. Thanks for the input though.
5. How much for the wheels and tires? tires have about 40-50% tread on them and wheels are not bent or rashed.
Thanks everyone !!!!

now that you say let the clear dry sand repeat it sounds real familiar, one of my buddies that owns a custom harley shop told me that one.
why would you choose not to spray house of kolor? Is it simply cost? or does it not wear well on a daily driver?

Yes, I am going to respray in Zinnoberrot or Cinnebar (both the same). I really like the color, and I want to keep the car the same too! One good thing is that I will now have a clearcoat, something that didn't come stock on red or white cars.
This will be my first real painting job, so it will be good to get some experience. I'm going to practice on the hood first for a little bit until I get something that I like, but hopefully it will all come out okay. I'll take lots of pictures and post them when I am done!
Spraying the clear, drying, then sanding and respraying, is that something that will really make a difference, or is it just something to do on show cars?
re the clear, from what I've heard it will make the car look *MINT*...hopefully john will have some input re that tho

Okay, I've looked at the PPG paints, and the chemical combo of the base color and the clear is what makes the glossy shine for the paints that I will be using. Neither the base or the clear is that shiny by itself. This is going to be a fun project!
House of Kolor is Great but not available in OE colors and not really cost effective on a daily driver. The best for custome jobs although I feel there clear is a little lacking. With the High solid formulas most paint co affer a really good clear regardless off brand. It boils down to what you are more comnfortable with.
The base drys to a semi gloss finish but is where you get you richness and color boldness, also color match. Clearing and sanding and re clearing a daily driver is really not necessary it is usually done of jobs with stripes or flames to hide the edges. High solid clears with 3 wet coats will give you the same depth and gloss if proprerly applied, wet sanded and buffed. A little hint I always gave painters when teaching classes was you can always shave or sand out a run but you cant buff out dry spray.
You want it on the edge of running because you can always buff out a run, you cant buff out dry spray. Fallow the directions to the
"T" dont use to mutch hardener, allow proper dry times and use proper air pressure. Everything is very crutial and plays a major factor in a good finish. The directions are there because the manufacturer spent tons of money to find the best ingrediants to make a good long lasting finish. Some painters are " SWAGERS "
(Scientific Wild Ass Guessers) they sometimes get good finishes
but dont see the vehicle 4 years later. Hope this helps. Good Luck
John
