I think all questions have been answered multiple times. BMW part numbers are 11 digits. The numbers listed are casting references and the same individual casting can be used in the construction of multiple parts. BMW dogleg boxes as used on our cars were 1:1 final drive. You can tell from pictures which box you have. Post pictures and maybe someone will help. The 265/6 as was used on all US e30 M3s can be interchanged with the one used on the e28 with m20 and m30 as well as the e24 as long as the appropriate bell housing is used.

    Very well then:

Ah I just read a nibble that made me realize that is indeed a dogleg. So, all 262 cast trans's are doglegs if they have the three piece construction indicating a fifth gear?

Yep that's a dogleg for sure. The bolts connecting the rear and forward casing to the intermidiate section line up.

Hi I'm about to buy what I believe is a 265/6 gear box. The code on the side is 262.0.0510.90, followed by 225 and 1.3. I'm a little thrown as on other 265/6's I've seen online they have 2.3 under the 225. Can anyone help me understand this difference? Unfortunately I can't seem to upload any pictures of it.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have 1979 BMW 635 CSI with M90 engine. One of previous owners has changed gearbox from 5speed(propably dogleg...) to 4 speed.
I'm looking for 5speed gearbox that will fit my engine and should have mechanical speedometer drive(first series E24).

    I have GETRAG with number:
    262.0.510.00
    225
    1.3

What kind of gearbox is it? Would it fit my engine?
    Please see attached photos:

I can't see your pics. I'm not sure, but they might restrict you from attaching pics until your post count is a little higher.

The 4-speed 262 and 5-speed 265 share a lot of parts, like the removable bell housing, front section, and tail case. The 262.0.xxx number on the front section is similar for all versions, so it won't definitely ID the model. Easiest way to tell them apart is that the 5-speed has an added intermediate section for the 5th gear. So if you're looking at the transmission, it'll actually have four distinct sections (bell housing, front case, intermediate section, tail case). I'm pretty sure it's possible for you to swap the mechanical speedo sender into a newer 265 to keep the mechanical speedometer functionality.

If you do purchase a 265, be sure to get the matching subframe mount, shift linkage and driveshaft. They're all different from the 4-speed versions.

    Edit:
There's a lot of good info in this E9Coupe thread, pics are excellent. Note that the 4-speed 262 and 5-speed 265 have identical casting numbers.

Hi, thanks for your response. This gearbox is 3-piece

I don't know why links to my pictures were deleted.

    Will try one more time:

I'm still not seeing the pics, sorry. I just see the links typed out in the page.

I did check out the pics by using the URLs in your post. It's definitely a 5-speed 265/5 close-ratio gearbox. They are rare and quite pricey these days!

If anyone else can't see the pics, here are the clickable thumbnails from Emte:

Your gearbox is equipped with one of the later Motronic 1.0 bellhousings, that'll make little difference for your early model mechanical car. However, your gearbox can be upgraded with the speedometer output. If you look at the rear right side, on the top, the speedo output port is still there. It should just have a metal plug instead of the speedo gear currently installed, but it's possible to upgrade it. If you still have the old 4-speed 262, it should be a fairly easy swap for a transmission shop to deal with as many parts are shared. If they're taking it apart anyway, have them save any decent synchro parts while they're in there. I'm told those are NLA from Getrag.

Alternatively, the 262 & 265 gearboxes were fitted to a great number of European cars. It's possible that Volvo, Jaguar or Opel can provide the proper gear to fit that output gear into your 'box. I'm not 100% sure that they use the same speedo ratio or output connector, but you might have some luck there.

I'm told, but I haven't confirmed, that the late '80s Getrag 242 & 245 (fitted to the E21 3-series) also used the same output gear, so it's possible to find them even if they're no longer in production.
