2000 - 528i (sedan) Camshaft Position Sensor Installation

Re: Year 2000 - 528i (sedan) Camshaft Position Sensor Placement and Installation

I'm new to Bimmerforums and very glad to be here. This is my first post.
Although I did a lot of wrenching in my teens and twenties, it was only in January that I started doing so again at age 59. I loved it! Spent $800 for parts, had a great time and saved a lot of money the dealer would have charged.

So now my problem is camshaft position sensors. I did a search and found some information but none related to my model. I just ordered both the intake and exhaust sensor from Pelican and the parts, along with a right rear wheel speed sensor, are in transit from CA to IL.

I've never replaced these before, not too sure where they are located, what they look like, and what I'm going to encounter. The sales rep. explained that one is easy to install and the other is not too easy.

Any advise regarding how they work, what they look like, where they are located, ow-to / ease of installation, photographs , etc. is most appreciated.

    Thanks, Doug

    here's the intake cam:

    Necessary preliminary tasks:

    Check stored fault messages.

    Switch off ignition.

    Remove suction filter housing.

    Note:
Arrow shows installation position of pulse generator.

Remove solenoid valve (1) of VANOS adjustment unit for inlet camshaft.
    Installation:
    Replace sealing ring.
    Tightening torque 11 36 1AZ.

Disconnect plug connection (1) on cable duct (2).

Release screw (1) on pulse generator (2).
Remove pulse generator (2) from cylinder head.
    Note:
To facilitate installation of pulse generator lead:
Secure an approx. 50 cm long auxiliary lead to plug connection of pulse generator.

Feed out end of pulse generator lead but only to such an extent that the auxiliary lead remains in the original routing in the intake system.
    Remove pulse generator with lead.
Disconnect auxiliary lead from faulty pulse generator. Secure plug connection of new pulse generator to auxiliary lead.
Using auxiliary lead, feed new lead of pulse generator through to cable duct at bottom.
    Installation:
Check sealing ring for possible damage, replace if necessary.

    and here's the exhaust cam:

    Necessary preliminary tasks:

    Check stored fault messages.

    Switch off ignition.

    Location:
On cylinder head at front on exhaust side.
Unlock plug (1) and detach from pulse generator.

Release screw (1) on cylinder head.
    Remove pulse generator.
    Installation:
Check sealing ring for possible damage, replace if necessary

i hope that helps... it's really not bad.
