Ended up fixing mine myself, those two contact points were broken, once fixed all my codes and lights went away. I also found an easy way to open the casing, a knife blade and a few taps with the hammer, then a little prying and it was open with little mess.

Nice! Mentally saved for future reference.
I assume it's obvious where the repair is needed. Any other pics?

That's a nice way to open it. Have any other photos?

Sorry no pics during the repair, my hands were dirty.

This pic from the last link above shows the two contact points that broke. It was pretty obivous on mine.
It's the two bigger points in the middle of the picture.

I outlined the two points I resoldered.

My module failed twice at around 80K intervals. Too bad a recall wasn't forced since it seems to be a design/manufacturing flaw

You can see where the old repair was done on mine, and you can also see where it has failed in another location. I have another unit coming in this one is a little hacked on the front cover. so i did not really want to fix this one.

That doesn't look too bad. I would give it a try resoldering those contacts.

A used module would have to be recoded and that can be a pain unless you have the tools.

You think it would need to be recoded? I did not think the older stuff needed to be.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I read that it had to. When I was researching I was pretty sure I saw people claiming they had to take the car to the dealer after putting in a used ab pump/module.

This appears to support that theory:

Depends on the situation, but the recoding tools are in my Z3 diagnostics thread.

I guess I could fix this one. It's just the repair from the last guy who had it open is a little messy. So the front cover is not that nice to work with.

My wife works at a BMW dealer, so she could take it there to be recoded.

Sounds like you got both options covered, if you have a fine tipped solder iron, I don't see any harm in trying, worse case you mess it up and have to use the used module you have coming.

Fallguy, in your first picture on the bottom right, there is some damage to the resistor and other little chips from what looks like improper disassembly. I wouldn't think it's an easy fix anymore.

A $150 investment doesn't sound too bad now. They can probably fix it all. maybe they would have a old cover they could replace the hacked one with

Yep just installed the used ABS/ASC module and the ABS light is off but the ACS light is on. Did not drive it yet tho.

Word is that if you install a new one or one from another car you need to get it coded.

When I read the codes it showed a pump motor malfunction. But it was clearly the solder joints that feed that prong that powers the motor.

    Word is correct.
I replaced mine and as described, ABS works when replaced, but ASC/DSC will remain lit until you have it coded to your car.

and if I understand correctly 328 power 4's software has that ability (to code it for the car)... would be nice for the community to put that procedure here [presuming my understanding is correct].

Yes, it is not a difficult procedure. I can put something together.

Now keep in mind this is specific to DSC cars, (fallguy's and OP's coupe is DSC); ASC is the traction system on the single vanos engines, 1.9L, and S52. Totally different system, as it has the ASC module separate in the glovebox area and pump is different. There are a lot of conflicting posts and mixing of the two different systems in this thread. Certainly adds to the confusion.

It will usually need coding if it comes out of an auto and you are putting into a manual car.

First this needs to be set up: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...xperimentation
However I do want to see the codes first before going that route. It can all be done at the same time with the above set up.
Fallguy, if you want, I can use remote desktop into your computer to do it, (case by case basis) until I can put an easy to follow document up.

I keep saying my car is ASC because that's what the module says on it.

I would love to be able to code this thing myself but I do not have a laptop or the cable needed.

Yesterday I went and simulated the DSC module coding on my 2000 Roadster, taking screenshots along the way. Will be making a pdf sometime.

Here is a pdf I made on how to use the NCSExpert program to code a DSC module that has been replaced with NEW or USED using the car's factory settings. 20-Pin port ONLY.
