Lightbulb DIY: Build your sub box for $30 in 5 minutes. No woodworking skills necessary.

We just received an interesting product. It is a DIY subwoofer box kit that comes complete with carpeting, binding posts and hardware. It is shipped flat to reduce the shipping costs and can be assembled in less than 5 minutes with a phillips screwdriver. It is constructed from 3/4" MDF and has really great binding posts/bannana connectors. The carpet is pre-attached and the joints are routered and dowel pinned to make assembly extrememly easy so no woodworking experience necessary.

Now for the best part. We have them on sale for $29.99 and due to their design, they ship standard UPS so shipping costs are very reasonable. Materials alone would cost more than this.

    Here is what you get:

The joints are routered and have adhesive tape on them so all you have to do is line up the numbers and fold the box together.

Option: You can also remove the adhesive strips and use wood glue for an even better bond, however the supplied adhesive works very good. (I know this because I tried to take one apart. It was not easy)

Now place the screws (supplied) into the pre-drilled holes and drive them in. That's it. The box is complete in about 5 minutes or less.

Option: Silicone sealant (not supplied) can be placed on the inside joints to prevent any air leakage. The routered joints and adhesive tape do a very good job, but a bit of overkill never hurt.

Now place your favorite speaker in the box and make the connections. You are done.

They are available in the following sizes:

    10" sub: Size- .8 cubic foot. 14" wide, 13" tall, 13" deep
    12" sub: Size- 1.55 cubic feet. 17" wide, 16" tall, 14.75" deep
    15" sub: Size- 1.95 cubic feet. 19" wide, 18" tall, 16" deep

I am using the 12" version in my car right anow and it sounds very good. It is built from 3/4 MDF wood, so it is really built better than most of the pre-made boxes available. I built it exactly as the instructions said and did not do anything extra like glue or silicone the edges. There are no air leaks that I can find and the box is super strong. It is really a great idea and looks great. The carpet finishes nicely even at the joined edges.

They are available on our website:
    http://www.12velectronics.com/servle...res/Categories

For another great deal, we can also include a very nice 12" subwoofer for $59.99 which would bring the total to $89.98 for both pieces. Or a 400w sub amp for $109.99 which would bring the total to $199.97 for a box, sub and amplifier. -Thats less than $200 for for a complete subwoofer package.

....ask me how. I think I smell another thread coming.

It is sealed. It would not be hard to port it if you wanted to. It really is a good looking box. They did a nice job.

The 12" version was just uploaded to our website. Here is the link that can be used to calculate shipping and purchase if anyone is interested:

just out of curiosity, what would it take to integrate the box/sub/amp package into an E39 with DSP and M audio?

Do you have factory subwoofers in your car?

EDIT: I'm sorry I reread your post and saw you have the M-audio package.

For your car you can tap a subwoofer signal off of these speakers. A simple line level converter will do connected from your factory subs.

If you add the box, this amp http://www.12velectronics.com/servle...-AMP%2C/Detail
    and this subwoofer: http://www.12velectronics.com/servle...2%22%2C/Detail
You will have a great subwoofer sytem for about $200.

The back side has an angle to it. The front is a 90. You can see the slight angle on the side panels in this pic:

Any chance I can get one of those? 3.8 cubic feet, tuned to 25 Hz. And I expect it to be no more than $30.

In reality, bump for something I've thought was a great idea for years. Makes building a box for the average joe a breze. I think currently ED is the only company I know of that makes and sells pre-cut enclosures.

You could put 2 of them together for $60. I will be doing some testing with ports soon. It would be very easy to cut a hole in the box and add it where you wanted it.

That is another project I will be doing. I already have an idea for a adaptor panel matched to the ski-pass.

Thanks Morgan. Not only is it very practical, but the quality is also VERY good. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but the box looks great. The binding posts are really high quality. Not the cheap spring loaded kind that you get in most boxes. I know these would cost more than $15 alone. The carpet is high quality and the Blaupunkt emblem is embroidered into the top panel. It is not some cheesy stick on label.

Hat's off to the Germans for coming up with this great idea and following through with a great quality product.

I just got mine for the E34 540i. Great product for a great price! It really does go together in about 5 minutes as long as you have a drill. The woofer is mine of course.

The quality is great! I can't say enough. And Tom is great to deal with and has answered all my questions and fast...also ships fast.

    Thanks Tom!

Ok, this is not meant to be a lecture but as car audio manufacturer, I have seen many, many boxes like this create real problems for the subwoofer and the over-all sound quality.

Keep in mind, double stick tape and a couple screws is not an optimum way of securing a subwoofer enclosure.
It may seal for now (it's new) but it's very likely to leak before too long.
Expansion and contraction of hot and cold temperatures coupled with internal pressure built up by the subwoofer will eventually cause failure.
    It's $30.00 for a reason.

Every subwoofer has it's own box air space and tuning requirements.
Simply putting a subwoofer in a generic box outside of the manufacturers subwoofer specifications can cause damage to your subwoofer.

Quality boxes are designed based on the subwoofer manufacturers specifications and are generally miter cut, glued and stapled (nailed) to ensure a tight fit.

If you have your own subwoofer, I would recommend going to a qualified local car audio retailer to have a box built to fit your subwoofer.
You may be surprised how inexpensive a basic sealed enclosure can be.
Porting is also best left to the pros.

In Tom's defense he did say you could seam seal with silicone if you so chose

If thats the case, being a manufacturer, you should know that screws do NOT hold an enclosure together

I guess that explains why every brand taken over by Maxxsonics has turned into complete trash.

Can you tell me what kind of "real" problems this box could cause to a subwoofer?

Keep in mind, double stick tape and a couple screws is not an optimum way of securing a subwoofer enclosure.

True, I do recommend sealing the box with silicone and using wood glue on the edges, but honestly the adhesive works very well. I tied to take one of them apart after it was built and I had to use a prybar and a hammer to get it apart. When it came apart, the adhesive did not break, but the wood around it did. I would have never believed it if I didn't see it for myself. The nice thing is that it is very easy to replace the factory adhesive with wood glue and it will be built as good as any other 3/4" mdf box can be.
    It's $30.00 for a reason.
The $30 price is pretty unbelievable, and I can understand your view that it might be too good to be true. I know no builder can even buy the materials for this price.
Every subwoofer has it's own box air space and tuning requirements.
Simply putting a subwoofer in a generic box outside of the manufacturers subwoofer specifications can cause damage to your subwoofer.
I don't know why Crunch or any of the other brands you are in charge of developing would be damaged by not having the exact size box, but most speakers are very safe within the airspace available in these boxes.

Quality boxes are designed based on the subwoofer manufacturers specifications and are generally miter cut, glued and screwed (many screws) to ensure a tight fit.
These boxes are mitre cut and the mating surfaces have routered channels and dowel pins, so I guess these are above your specifications for quality.

The purpose of this thread is to show people an easy and inexpensive way to get a subwoofer in their cars. Custom designed cabinets have an advantage for vehicle application, driver tuning, etc., but will also cost much more money. This is a simple and quality solution- And you can't beat the price.
