I am looking for any info on 1983 528i JPS. Pleeeeez help meeeee!!!
Regrets but I don't know what the "JPS" designation might be. It sounds like it might be something for the "down under" market. You might check out the website I use most for E29 info and tips: http://www.mye28.com
There are a LOT of Australians and New Zealanders there who could help you.
JPS is the acronym for John Player Special. A tobacco brand made famous by its black and gold color scheme in the mid to late 1970s. They were succesfull in racing e24, e21s, e30s and e30 M3s later. BMW had two different showroom models with the JPS color cues, sold only in Australia.
1969 2002 racecar + 1989 e30 M3 racecar
There were two JPS M528i's built as road cars for Frank Gardner (team manager) and Jim Richards (lead driver). They were black with gold pinstriping in the same scheme as the race cars/323i's with a cloth Recaro interior and very stiff suspension.
Frank's car ended up in Adelaide for quite a long time, my father purchased it from one of his employees (who also had a JPS 323i) in about '96 but then bought a M535i so the JPS sat for a year or two before being sold to a guy that lived in Roxby Downs.

There was a discussion about the JPS cars sometime last year on MyE28.com.

Thanks for info, I just bought the other JPS 528i. It has all the stuff; dogleg box, 3.25 lsd, bilsteins etc. Car is rust free. Has new cam and head reco. Engine is tight. Was running bad but I found distributor vacuum lines were reversed so it was pinging at 3000plus. Now doing brakes and front suspension then will be perfect. Looks like this was Jim's car.
Post some pics, if possible. I had heard that one of the cars was floating around near Tullamarine, Meloburne, but have never seen one in the flesh. Along with the 4 (if memory serves) 635 race cars, 100-150 e21 323i (of which there are probrably less than 20 left), some E30 323i (not sure of numbers or if they were individually numbered like the e21's), the M3 race cars (only 2 I think, and 1 is located in Sydney, and competes reguarly) the two 528's completes the JPS lineup.
There was also a 1 off, an E21 318i turbo race car as well, which I nearly forgot.
One of the members of this forum, Madhatter, like me, has an E21 JPS. He has a site that is dedicated to the JPS, and I believe, wants to create a register of the JPS cars. The site is www.blackbmw.net.
If you need any JPS specific info, I may be able to help, just drop me a line.
Congrats on the purchase.
Cheers
David

Hi David. I bought the car from Melbourne 2 weeks ago and drove it back to Sydney. The front shocks blew At Goulburn (700klm) and the idler arm was shot as was the brake bomb, so it was a handful at 140kph but I made it home alive. Today I finished the steering and suspension and tomorrow I will do the brakes, then machine up some new shift bushes and crank the shift to the right so I don't have to slip my seatbelt to find reverse. Will post pics when work is finished.

Just wondering if there's someone who knows how to identify the original JPS models? Have a numbered E21 JPS 528i 4 door, but not sure where to go for info about what to look for....
Only just found this post and joined, so hoping someone out there will read it that knows something! Thanks
I now own the last of the E28 JPS cars, the one driven by Jimmy Richards

My dad owned both of them, first he had franks then sold that to buy jims. Prior to owning franks he had a 530 MLE.
