Can I go any wider than 225/55?

Zubbie, thanks for the link, but I am already familiar with the site and the info there. That site only lists 225/55 for the 16x8 rim. On our door jamb it lists an optional tire size 240/45/zr15, but can I use up to a 240/xx/16 tire without issues?
Thanks
Herbert

245/40 seems like a good size.
Pretty sure the E38 wheels are lower offset than that, aren't they? I have E38 weaves for the winter, pretty high hopes for them.

search for Q's old posts, I think he covered it, and from what i recall you can't go wider than 225 as they're actually 23mm offset, not 20mm.
No current BMWs.

Yeah, that's correct about the offset.
My winter wheels are E38 16" Style 5s so I'm hoping they won't rub. Tires are Blizzak LM-22s in 225/55-16H so hopefully I'm in the clear. If not then 3mm spacers should do the trick.
A search would have revealed this thread:Originally Posted by http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/wheels_upgrade.htm
