Getting on the freeway with a Turbo Volvo who claimed he could keep up with a Ram air T/A at 160 and a sport bike followed. We lined up at around 65 mph. Of coarse the bike got ahead first the Volvo a steady neck to neck up until 120 mph. As I pulled away from the Volvo I steadily caught up to the bike. We went at it for a few miles. I looked down at the speedo and it read 145 mph we kept it up for a little longer then both of us finally slowed down. I was pretty impressed on how the bike couldnt pull anymore after hitting 150 mph.

WOW 140! I can only imagine :
Heh, as far as the Volvo, you shouldn't have worried too much, but the bike, was it a 600 or 900? Do you know? Either that or maybe he wasn't willing to go past 150 for safety reasons. My friend has gone about 180 (or so he says) on his 600, so I dunno, maybe the guy on the bike was playing it safe after while.
Remember, safety first, THEN fun
~Chris
I wasn't worried about the Volvo just wanted toprove to him that there is no in hell he can keep up. I don't know where hr gets that he can keep up with Ram air T/A at 160 mph. As far as the bike I believe it was a 600. But it was a rush.

Yeah, Willy has a 900 (correct me if I'm wrong Willy) and he eats all kinds of cars for breakfast. Bikes are just insanely fast
~Chris
Nope.. i have a ZX-6R.. a 600.. a 600 bike tops out at around 165mph.. which BTW Ive never hit.. I hit 150mph on my bike frequently and let me tell u its NERVE racking. Its friggin FUN as hell tho.. :p But its scarey.. a rush like u wouldnt believe.. and most people back off at that speed. Accelerating on the highway is as fast as accelerating around town... so if he wasnt accelerating.. he wasnt trying. Unless he had an older sport bike.. in which case does top out around 150mph.

Whoops sorry Willy, always thought you had 900, oh well, still want a bike, and I WILL get one one of these days

I've said this before, but unless your E36 is well-modded, a stock Volvo turbo (i.e 850 turbo, t-5, S80 t-6, etc.) will kick your ass, bad!
1994 Dinan 3
1996 Volvo 850 Turbo
any mods to the volvo Dinan3er?...just curious...i love those damn things
umm, I'm guessing that M3Dave probably has an M3. In which case, maybe we should reconsider who's ass is gettin' kicked.
So far, my Volvo is stock. But maybe later (the Dinan gets first pick) if I change out the computer and add an exhaust, i'd be putting out 285 hp with the Volvo. It's just another testament to how easy it is to mod turbo-ed cars.
Oh, and by the way, I would hope that M3Dave pulled away from the Volvo if it was stock. He has more engine mods than my Dinan and my E36 is just a 325i (my car started to slowly walk away from the Volvo from a rolling start at 55mph).
And I don't know about badbadm. I guess I just need to mod the 850 and kick his ass bad!
Take it easy guys!
Dinan3er
If any of you beat me in the Dinan or the Volvo, then I must bust out this bad aZZ!
I had raced a Volvo C70 2 door 5speed with my 325is, and he kept up pretty well. I pulled maybe 2 car lengths on him, then we were even to 125.
A month later I saw the same guy on my commute but this time with the M3 with a few bolt ons, and I put 8 or so car lenghts between us pretty fast.
That made me feel better.:p :p

I think he meant the reconsidering part for the Volvo beating you.Originally posted by ///M3Dave

Unfortunately I could not express the subtle nuances of speech in my post.
I guess what I was trying to say was not to dismiss Volvo Turbos as petty competition, because they are very worthy.
Out of curiousity, badbadm, what mods have you done to your M3? I'd really like to know.
Take it easy and drive safely!

You are dead even with a NEW M5 in the straights????
Common.. Even the new M3 can't do that...
An older M5, I would not doubt it one bit..

I have a V70 T5, and its fairly quick on the the frwy. From a dead stop, thats a different story. It takes a few seconds for the boost to build, so a stock M3 will put a few cars on it before the boost builds. Be wary on the frwy. Just my opinion.
95 LTW, Dinan CAI, Chip, TB, Borla..
98 V70 T5 stock with Yoks AVS
It doesn't make sense to me.
A friend who is a racecar driver, went up against an M5 from 60 130, and hung till about 95 or so in his E46 M3, then the M5 walked away.
Same guy had his fully gutted lightweight M3 with all the bolt ons group N suspension. and a 3:46:1 gear ratio, and he said an instructor in a students car was right on his ass the whole time during a track session.
When they came to the straights, and he was winding out the geas, the M5 pulled next to him, the driver noded, and took off like he was hitting the brakes.
An M5 with exhaust is over 400hp!
Have you dynoed you car. 3180, is only 20 lb under normal weight for a US spec.
My car is supercharged with 290 to the RWs, and I still don't think I can hang in the straights with an M5.
I know that the numbers for the Euro motor are not as aggressive as the ones for a supercharged car.
I would really like to see this in action...:p
Good for you and E36 if it is the case.
What other work was done to your car?

I've had both, and when push came to shove, I elected to get rid of my M5 in favour of keeping my 325is (???, what?? am I nuts??).
I bought the 325is for the purpose of building it into a complete Club Racer, and slowly but surely, we're along that route. Having taken both cars to numerous track events, my 325is was faster around both Mosport and Cayuga than my M5.
Now, I never reach the speeds on the backstraight that I would in the M5. However, laptimes were MUCH lower in the 325, and to be honest, a lot more fun.
Being in Canada, we have a fair chunk of Euro M3 (3.0 Litre, 94's) in the club. I've seen plenty of them keep up to me on the backstraight at Mosport, and on short tracks like Cayuga, the fat pig was just too much to sprint around the track.
It's not just straight HP, but rather HP/weight. My M5 was roughly 4000 lbs, while my E36 is down to a currently portly 3050 lbs (shooting for 2700 or so when all is said and done...). The M5 is roughly 10.5:1 and the Euro M3 is about 11.4:1. Now, while this may still favour the M5, the Euro M3 is more likely to have a higher exit speed entering into the backstraight. This, combined with the ability to maintain acceleration slightly longer, it's pretty easy for a well setup M3 (Euro or otherwise) to keep up with an M5 on the track.
Actually, one of the interesting things I've seen on the track is that several M5 owners REFUSE to believe that a car with so much less horsepower can possibly pass them on the track.
Now, on to the turbo issue; yes, that's the damn problem with forced air engines....turn up the boost, and it's quite easy to turn up the HP.
Some Audi tuners have software for the engine that allows them to pick from 4 different management profiles, depending upon fuel used (91 octane, 100+ octane), stock, or a detuned valet setting. All of which is controllable from inside the cabin. Now that's slick....
Pat
Thanks for the info Pat.
My old 325 was super quick, and fairly light as well.. That combined with 3:91.1 gearing made me consistently quicker than a 993 911 turbo in an AutoX.
I understand the hp to weight ratio which accounts for enormous credit in the racing world.. I guess I was shocked to hear that the M5 could not dominate in the straights...
The Ss are not the M5s favorite stomping ground, I can attest to that after having driven one. But in a straight line... Hmmm:

I'm sure badbadm could keep up with an M5 on the track. The M3 is so much more suited on the track than it is on straight-line acceleration (but it is, by no means, a slug...).
badbadm, did you import the car to the US? I'm thinking of selling my Dinan 3 at the end of next year and buying either a LTW or a Euro-Spec M3 (E36).
Take care,
Dinan3er
Dinan3,
Don't let your car hear you say that! You may blow a water pump on the way home

BadBM,
There is one factor you neglected to mentiona aside the weight factor, it's driver skill, and error.
I once read a Road and Track article about the PTG racing E36 M3, and how Boris Said simply had mastered that car.
The writer of the article who by no means was lousy driver, stated that he would probably be incapable of outdriving Boris with himself in the GT racer, and Boris in a stock M3!!!
You never know...
