    Sunroof Inner Cover Missing?!

Okay, I am about to buy a 2001 330i with like 30,000 miles on it. Everything is perfect except the inner sunroof liner cover that you would manually slide back to reveal the glass seems to be missing...completely missing.
The seller, after clearing his throat, said that is must have been stuck inside the roof and he would see about pulling it out later on.

Now I did a search and only saw that someone said that it is an expensive job to fix or replace that sliding inner cover and its a one of the issues that early E46s have.

Can someone explain....in further detail. I really want this car and I'm getting a good deal. But if that is going to be an issue then I want to bring it up as I settle on a final price.

I would def use that as a bargaining chip when negotiating the price. If everything else is in good mechanical and cosmetic condition and the price was right I would buy it and fix it myself. Or you could just take it out completely and tint the sunroof darker

    Thanks,
But can you just buy the slide cover and insert it in there, or does it require extensive DIY Labour?
If it is not there he's gonna have to knock down the price by $500

As a general rule, you have to remove the glass to work on the shade. It's not impossible, but does take a careful hand and some patience.

The clips/sliders on the E46 sunroof are pretty delicate. Three possibilities:
    - The clips jumped the track but are not broken, and the sunroof shade is back in the headliner somewhere (kinda unlikely)
    - The clips broke and the sunroof shade is stuck back in the headliner somewhere (quite likely)
    - The clips broke and a previous owner pulled the shade completely out and discarded it. (moderately likely)

There are at least two DIYs for this on http://www.bimmerdiy.com - take a look and see if it's something you can handle.

RealOEM has list prices for the shade at $120ish, and a repair kit at $100ish. [I didn't think the clips were that expensive, according to the DIYs - maybe I'm mis-remembering] You could probably find a used shade for cheaper, someplace like www.bmrparts.com

    Awesome.
Thanks so much. If I buy this car then I will be glad to be part of the E46 forums. Looking forward to meeting my new family.

I already spent 5 great years over in the E36 department....and look forward to many years here.

can the shade just dissappear inside the headliner?

I'm about to buy a 2001 330i and I can't seem to find the shade at all. Its just the moon roof glass.
Even if the previous owner removed the shade, how likely is that? Is it as easy as pulling it out?

Also how does not having the shade beneath the moon roof glass affect cabin temps in cold weather?

This is what I have...notice it is just the glass!

and I'm assuming this is normal, where you can see the shade and the shade's handle...

I believe if you open the glass completely - open it till it stops, then open it some more - the shade will disappear completely into the headliner .... will go out and test in a bit.

Aside from that case, the shade handle should always be visible.

I think the handle is supposed to be visible all the time. I have a problem with my shade and need to fix it, hopefully the DIYs are helpful.

So the shade does go all the way into the headliner...
I just needed to know that for fact. So that may mean that the missing shade is actualy inside the headliner
    Thanks.

I highly doubt that the PO took out the shade. It's stuck in there
