    1990 BMW keyfob

I recently was given my brothers old BMW, a 1990 735iL and I have been looking for a key which must have been lost. it is the key fob that when you press the BMW logo, the key pops out in a fan-like motion. I would post a link but i am not allowed to as I am a new member.

Does anyone know if I can buy a replacement or if they are sold by 3rd party dealers?

The original one is from BMW only, the socalled switchblade. You can buy it from the dealer for abt. 200 $, plus you need a blank key stub for abt. $ 15, and this key stub has to be finished by your key shop. Or you order the key stub from BMW to fit your car's lock.
Part numbers and pics here, the lower part of the switchblade where the key fob is attached is also available as single item. Ohh, and the 4 batteries and the small screw cost extra.

    thanks!

Thank you, Shogun! that is exactly what the key looked like. In order to buy the parts, would I have to go to the actual dealership? or can it be bought online?

you have to go to the dealer.

Sometimes they are sold on Ebay used, but not often. So watch that.
I still have a brand new one here in the original box. That means the remote fob complete as shown in the pic upper right section. Plus some blank key stubs (which your local key wizzard then has to complete to fit your locks), and also some of the small screws to hold the key stub. Also the lower section I have new as spare.
Imported directly from Germany. But as the EURO is very strong against the $, you might get the parts cheaper from your local dealer. And I already paid for shipping and import to Japan where I live. Then additionally would be the cost for shipping from Japan to the U.S.
So buy locally, or wait some time if something on Ebay shows up. Also watch here, there are only E32 drivers, and sometimes people offer used parts for sale from their parts cars. Just recently Beach 911 sold one of the remote controls, including the receiver parts too.

I have one that came with the 90 735iL parts car I recently got. The only problem is, I can't get the damn thing to do anything. I replaced the batteries and use the initializing proceedure, but nothing happens. The door locks don't respond or the alarm.

There are 2 versions of infrared remote controls. Earlier ones just work the other way round.
production date before 08/1988 and after 09/1988.
The closing and opening is just opposite on these switches. Also synchronizing.

    Programming the IR remote:
To reprogram a new IR remote or your old one after replacing the bateries:
    1. Turn the ignition to position 2.
    2. Hold the IR transmitter on the DWA led in the center of the fresh air grill.
    3. Press button 1 untill the transmitter LED begins to flash (after about 2 seconds). Now your all done.
Within 15 minutes any other remotes to be used with the car must be initialised. There is a max of 4 remotes.

Checking if your IR remote funtions:
If you are doubting wheter your IR remote is working try holding the remote about 10 mm from a reflecting surface. A mirror should do just fine. Push the open button. After the intervall blinking the LED will remain on. Now try holding the remote close to a non reflecting surface. Press the open button. Now the LED should go off after the intervall blinking.

You can also check the function of any IR-Remote controller by watching the led, while activating it, trough a digital camera. You don't have to take a picture, the LED function can be seen as a white light on the camera LCD, normal mobile camera works as well.

Shogun, I may need your help in remembering this...but those IR key systems on the e32 also have a hidden fuse under the rear seat. Make sure that it's even installed...and the control module is also under the rear seat near the rear E-box.

And if you can find the switchblade remote online...you can still order the keyblade from your local bmw dealer and it will come in already cut based on your car's VIN...or you can order an uncut key blank (BMW part # 51 21 1 950 394)..I believe both have to be ordered from the Euro side of the BMW part database...they don't show up on the USA side.

(wow...can't believe this pic is still being used)

Key blank is item #6 in diagram below and at this link: http://bmwfans.info/original/E32/Lim...1/ill-41_0719/

The hidden fuse is for the drive away protection in combination with the OBC.

    I tried the remote tests.
The white flash is visible through a digital camera. I can't get the mirror trick to work yet.
Is there a part number hidden somewhere on here for one to be able to tell which button sequence I should be using?

No part number there, just try to initialize it from both ways. I know it is sometimes really hard. Try on my own more than half an hour sometimes and sometimes it works immy.
Do not forget to use another key to switch ignition on while they remote is initialized. Also read your owners manual once more.
Direct the remote as shown in my above link to the LED on the dash, not at the receiver, which sits under the roof.
