    Camshaft timing M50

    Hi

How would you adjust the cams (dual intake cams, 240` 9.7mm), on a M50b28 when going FI ?

    Any overlap at all?

I went for 0mm lift on the exhaust, and 0.5mm lift on the intake now, and got nm top at 4500 and hp top at 5800.. full pressure at 4000rpm..

When i had 0 ex and 1.2mm intake, i had NM top at 4200 and hp at 5400.. This time i hit full pressure at 3600rpm..

If i`m going for more top hp at higher rpms, i need less overlap right?
Will this make a shorter or wider powerband?

I was a little dissapointed about loosing 400rpm of spool, when it gained so little up top...

I`ve done HOURS of research about this subject today.. Most of it, on the PPF forums..
There are several threads about the subject there, and it looks like they adjust them to 1.5-1.8mm lift on both cams..

I guess that will be my settings as well, if i dont get any other good opinions.

In theory, the effect of overlapping will kill your idle and low end torque, but it will gain power on the high range. If you run without overlap, your torque will be in the low end, but will lack of power after mid range up to high range.

    Thats my conclusion as well

i had a tremendous torq without overlap, but no top end..

We`ll se next friday what the power output will be with the new settings

I bring this old post alive. I´m trying to set my camshafts (both 240deg, 9.7mm lift) on m50b28 non vanos for turbo (hx35). But i don´t know how to properly time them.

I would like to have faster spool and more mid range torgue, and good power curve to the rev limiter (7500rpm). The engine has 10.5:1 compression, running on ethanol e85.

Last week I spent on the internet finding some numbers. I´ve heard that the best way is advance both cams and lower the overlap. Is that true ? Could you advice me some numbers ?

Next problem is that i dont know how to properly time the cams. I have instaled degree wheel on the crankshaft and the gauge for measuring position of the cams. I think there is a problem with hydraulic lifters, i´m not able to find surely when the IV and EV opens, when closes. Everytime i recieve slightly different numbers or i cant get on the duration number 240°, but only around 200°. I´m using 0.05" technique.

I think i will try easier lobe centerline method. Can somebody tell me some numbers to set?
    Intake camshaft lobe centerline
    Exhaust camshaft lobe centerline
    Lobe separation angle
    IVO, IVC, EVO, EVC

    Thank you for help

I think that if you degree the cams to find out when the valves open and close at .005” and 0.050” you can see better what is going on. You will then be able to speak camshaft talk and things will make more sense.

I have tried it and you were right. Also tried a lobe centerline method and it suited me better. Now i set camshafts like this, can anyone tell me how wrong or good the numbers are?received_10209091441963630.png

I think the intake valves might open few degrees earlier..
