    Check engine light on after motor swap

    After replacing the '92 325 motor(non-vanos) in my 325I with one from a '93(vanos), the check and check engine lights are on. It was an automatic and I couldn't get 1st gear to work so I did the 5-speed conversion, thinking the CEL would go off then. It didn't. Runs pretty good but idles @1400rpm. Any ideas why? ( I need it to be fixed in order to pass emissions.) It has a small issue with erratic idle but not bad.

    Did that and it just reads "input time". However, the check engine light went throught some cycles; blinking once, 6 times, and two times. I tried it keeping my foot on the pedal after the last stomp, and by letting the pedal return; both ways. Which is the correct way? Do I need the onboard computer from a '93 5-speed or is it the same as the '92 automatic? Would it possibly be the TPS?

    Thanks BB. I'll try that. {I noticed that you have an M-50. I have an M-50 block from my '92 that apparently had a blown head gasket. (The head was missing when I bought the car.) The block is complete except for the head and such things as alternator, p.s. pump, fan, A/C compressor. It seems to be good. What is it worth roughly?}

    The OBC doesn't read out the codes... "INPUT TIME" means it wants you to set the clock.

    You need to do the stomp test and count the flashes to get a 4-digit code. Then look this code up on one of the many OBD code lists that exist on this site and others,

    OK. Just found the full instructions from "Pelican Parts". Makes sense now. For example, if it flashed 1-2-6-2 then it would be a problem with the idle speed actuator.

    The stomp test went as follows: Check engine flashes once; then once; then twice; then once; then 6 times. I'm assuming the first flash is just for fun and the 1,2,1,6 is the code. Repeats in the same way.The Pelican info states that 1216 refers to the throttle potentiometer. I'm guessing this means the three terminal TPS. I replace the part with used twice and still have the CEL. I guess the next step is to run tests on the TPS?
