The benefits of double vanos is a flatter torque curve. If you put an M50B25 dyno next to an M54B25 dyno plot, you would notice that the M54 has more low-end torque and power.
Consequently, the motor would theoretically get better fuel economy compared to the M50. This may be offset by the extra weight carried in the E46, though...so the EPA ratings would be similar, if not worse for the E46.

ok if the e36 325 has more torque and hp and weighs less how come according to www.car-stats.com the 94 325i (fastest year according to the website) has a 7.4 0-60 while the 2001 325i e46 is faster with a 7 sec 0-60?

I'm guessing the newer 2.5 probably also meets lower emissions standards, and might even provide better gas mileage, etc...
wasn't the M52 2.5l used in the E36? Thought those were 170 hp/181 ft/lbs. same as the M52TU 2.5l? so the M54 2.5l has about 14 more hp?Originally posted by 97-328is

The M52 was the 2.8 liter found in the e36 328. The M50 is the 2.5L found in the e36 325, and makes 189 hp. The M54 is the 2.5L found in the e46, and makes slightly less horsepower than the M50 due to lower emissions, OBDII, ect.wasn't the M52 2.5l used in the E36?
