Anyone ever work for a dealer washing cars, moving cars etc....

i need a summer job to pass the time. has anyone ever worked for a dealer washing the cars, moving them around the lot, etc? are they pretty selective on who gets the job? any tips on how to get the job?

Usually you have to know someone to get a job like that. Age 18 is also a requirement. I don't think it pays very well either.

yea.. two of my friends who are 5 years older than me.. are salesman at a Honda dealership.. i was going to work there.. as a porter.. when i found out what kind of work you do.. and you only get paid minimum wage.. i said.. F that.. u can find much better jobs that pay better.. btw. i found a job and work in a cubicle.. i make $13-14 an hour.. much better than $6.75..

its BS work.. 8-5 M-F thing.. basically all i do all day.. is get the stacks of papers.. which says if the person is approved or denied.. its a mortgage/loan type of thing.. i punch up the file.. and click.. yes or no.. thats pretty much it.. ALL DAY LONG very repetitive... the job gets boring.. but i get to sit down in a A/C'd office with a computer.. when i get bored.. i surf the forums.. pays not bad for a college student.. btw.. i am basically working for mods.. everything i make from work.. goes to my car.. i got no money.. damn BMW

I'm working at Carmax as a detailer this summer with two of my friends. It didn't seem too hard to get the job, considering I've never had a real job before (I've had several volunteer jobs though). It doesn't pay too badly, it's $10/hour, but it's on commission. We work long, ten hour days, but you can easily make 20-30 hours a day if you work hard. Basically we just detail cars that come in before they go to the front lot to be sold, it's a pretty good job. I'm still training, but after next week I'll get paid on commission. We have to clean the interiors (vacuum, shampoo carpet sometimes), and clean and buff the exterior. You have to work hard if you want good money, but it's not bad and it's pretty fun. I got to detail and drive an M5 and an E46 M3 just last week.

I got a job @ the local BMW dealer, in the service department, and I assume it will be doing what you stated- they have yet to really tell me what I'm going to do or when I'm going to start...but should be fun getting to drive the new cars (hopefully) all the time.

I got my job through knowing the service manager- parents bought 4 cars there, and my mom frequentily talks to the guy every time we go there(which is alot) so he's friendly to me and offered me a job.

I started this job when I was about 12... washing the front and side lines, moving all the cars around, rotating whats out front, some basic mechanical work, that kind of stuff.

Of course, my dad is a car dealer and taught me to drive stick when i was 10, so....

I made $5/hr back then for a bit, then $6. Now I make $10 whenever I do stuff for him (mostly computer related now, though I still occasionally do the front line for him), off the books payment, not so bad. I used to enjoy driving all the cars around years ago, but now I own a bmw everything else is total shit so its not so exciting. Occasionally he has cars that are more exciting than mine...

Each car counts for a certain amount of hours. For example, full detail counts as 3.5 hours, touch-up paint counts as 1 hour, removing tint counts as .2 hours per window, etc. If you get cars that are already relatively clean, you can get a lot of hours in a short period of time.

Well, up at the BMW dealer up here its 18 or bust. Thankfully, I don't want a twelve year old moving my car.

I used to do it, it was decent money $9.50/hr. Pretty easy work, also you tend to become the bitch of the dealership and end up moving and cleaning up other things around the dealorship.

Ha.. I remember one time when I was quite young I had to move a standard bmw, don't remember which model or whatever.

I couldn't figure out why I kept stalling it, for quite a while. Then I realized that it was because when I pulled it out of that "weird" reverse gear position momentum carried the stick over into third gear instead of first.

I used to do something like that at honda, I used to move cars around, and drive shuttle, which is just taking people home while their cars are being serviced, its a cool job, but yea it doesn't really pay, I was also a lube tech so I got paid more then the average shuttle driver, but still not too much...its a really fun job though all you do is drive around...

well i have friends who worked on the port of la, and they get to off load all the new cars, before it goes to customs, its hard to get a job as a longshoreman, since they are doing a background check on everyone...too bad u dont want to be an escort driver...u get 30bucks plus 20% of what the girls make....oh yah you have to be a body guard as well...

The longshoreman have a huge union these days. They know that their jobs are at stake with the new technology available which would make their jobs obsolete. That is why they had had a strike several months ago, halting all incoming shipments at the largest port in the world.

Anyways, about being 18, my friend was 17 I think when we worked as a porter at the local Porsche dealer. He said the salesmen were quite receptive to his Acura Integra Type R. I'm glad to see porsche salesmen are aware of the capabilities of cars besides the porsche marque.

I did this for a few summers at a Mercedes dealership. It was fun, occasionally got to drive Porsches and one time a Lotus. It didnt pay very much, but i got the job through a friend.
