about how much is a new BMW HOOD EMBLEM for an E39 528i
from the dealer ?
Depends on the dealer.
I have an E36 and my local dealer wanted $24. I bought one from Cirlce BMW (www.circlebmw.com) for $10 including the grommets. The price for yours should be similar.

$14, I just had to replace mine. If the old one is still on there, be careful removing it... I ended up scratching my paint, that thing was stuck on there really tight.

nick ill be sure to try and use fishing line to take it off, it might help ..but i thougt it was held on by two clips ?
the emblem has two prongs on the back which insert into two rubber or plastic grommets in the hood, just remove the old emblem and pop the new one in.

I saw a write up somewhere on the proper way to remove the emblem. I believe it was on bavauto.com. In any case, fishing wire isn't it.
Use blue masking tape to tape off around the emblem to protect your paint, then wrap a putty knife or a flat head screw driver in a soft towel and gently lift the old emblem up around the edges, going around in a circular motion. That's the best way to do it.
as for price: 411. Call up your dealership and ask.

I used an old expired credit card to pry under the roundel. Very easy removal and install, took about 10 minutes.
