Step two: Take hammer to grill

Step three: Feel sorrow for grill

LOL, I remember when i broke a tab. There was really no way to fix it unless you get some REALLY strong epoxy. the grill sits with a lot of tension inside the opening.

As easy as abc, drill the black kidney grill lip so that the edge of the hole is in line with the hood lip (like so, b d p q, the straight line of the alphabets representing the edge of the hood lip, with the hole in the grill lip) and incert flat head short expansion plugs from grill side where the tabs are broken (drill to size of plugs)

Use toilet wax. It will stay put and be easy to remove when you decide to replace them.
Possibly, maybe, conceivably, thinking about getting back into another E39. Hide your daughters

So I just glue the 2 pieces of the grill together with epoxy then shove it in from the front and hope for the best?

Yeah if its really bad then go for it. The two pieces are not really meant to be separated. They should go in and out as one piece.

Use silicone rubber, as Crazy Glue is not waterproof.

I don't know if Crazy Glue is waterproof or not, but it did fail after a short time.
I did the job again with some epoxy, got real surgical about it, waited for the first pass to set and then reinforced the joints with a second pass. Success! (So far.)

Main thing for me was learning that the two halves don't need to be apart to install them.
