    New Check Engine Light Issue?

    OK guys

I have searched but I have not seen this issue with the check engine light. Previously I had my light activated due to a bad secondary air pump. I replaced it and cleared the codes and light went off so I could get it inspected. I took it in for the inspection and was told it failed inspection because the check engine light did not illuminate with the key turned to the on position. It is supposed to light up and then go off after starting car up.

They suggested that the bulb may be burned out. I guess they thought I may have taken it out in order to pass inspection. I didn't do that and I know it was working the day before when I cleared the codes for the secondary air pump.

Does anyone have any idea why my check engine light will not come on with the key in the on position when it was working the day before. I tried to take the instrument cluster out to check the bulb assuming it may have coincidentilly burnt out. I could not get the wire connections unplugged in order to get it out.

    Sorry for the long post.

    Frustratedly yours
    Scott

    Bulb's burnt out.

    They are a "latch-and-lever" type (my description) - like #9 & #10 here:

There's a little tab just below the swing latch that you need to push in a bit, the the lever will move and disconnect the plug from the back of the cluster. To re-install, get teh plug lined up and partially inserted, and swing the lever back to the "lock" position. A bit tough to do one-handed, but easy once you get the hang of it.

    Hope that helps,
    Jim

Thanks for the reply and info. I will give it another shot with the instrument panel. Are the bulbs specific for BMW's or can I get them at the local Autozone?

They should be available at a regular parts store, but I can't say for sure. Just take the burnt out one with you and have 'em match it up.

I had a tought time finding the bulbs for my `98 OBC. None of the locals had it. I ended up getting it from the local BMW dealership. Couple bucks, no biggie.

    Gac's the name. Seriously.

I drive a Metallic Fern Green 1998 BMW M3 Convertible with a hard top. I just rolled over 67k, and I rate the current appearance of the car as 7.8/10, pending repair of some trim pieces. I rate the drive condition as a 7.1/10 until I figure out why my clutch gets into a "slippy mood" evey few months. It is bone-dry stock, except for a modern head unit and slotted/dimpled rotors and ceramic pads. I like it this way. It is awesome.

    That is all. Carry on.
