S54 Shim Kit & other parts (DIY)

Hi Randy and all others that have done their own S54 valve adjustments.

I've decided to pick up the shim kit and all associated parts necessary to get the job done correctly. According to an awesome DIY I found browsing for tips and info, these are the parts and tools that will be needed:

    Special Tools
    -Shim installer, $25.20, 90-88-6-114-400
    -Shim Kit, $319.50, 11-34-0-031-525

    Seals, rings, gaskets, etc
    -Sealing rings, $8.43*6, 11-12-7-831-271
    -Cover gasket, $34.00*1, 11-12-7-832-034
    -Rubber grommets, $2.34*2, 11-12-1-437-395
    -Rubber grommets, $2.55*13, 11-12-7-830-972
    -Copper sealing rings, $0.38*2, 07-11-9-963-129

    Misc supplies from parts store

    -Measure device - micrometer
    -High temp gasket sealant/maker
-Big ass 1 1/4 wrench (or 32mm) for fan
-Feelers, as diverse as you can get
    -Parts cleaner

Any other tools, parts, and recommendations that will come in handy? I recall seeing BMW specific feeler gauges. Am I better off with these or will a universal feeler gauge tool be just fine?

    Thanks!!

The BMW feeler gauges are right-angle, so unless you can find generic right-angle ones, go BMW.

I have a worksheet for recording the valve settings you find/leave; pretty sure Daniel has it in the maintenance section of rfdm.com. If not, E-mail me for a copy.

I'd have to look up the part numbers of the other stuff, which I don't have time to do at the moment, but you've probably got the right ones...

Some on-line retailers (BavAuto?) will sell you a shim kit then refund the shims you don't use..... Unless you want an entire kit.....

Thanks Randy, I already came across your worksheet and will be using it to document the findings. When time permits, could you please let me know the part numbers for the feeler gauges and other parts that I will need?

Yeah, there are a couple generous folks on the M3 boards are offering loan plans for the shim kit as well but I plan to just pick up the entire kit.
