View Full Version : Door Unlock Question

I have my e90 programmed to lock when I start to drive. What I would like is if it would unlock when I turn off the car and remove the key. I know that's not an option using the programming stalk but maybe it's something that the dealer can program? I had a couple of Audis in the past and the dealer was able to do that.

Not sure if that is doable. I think you just need to get used to it, just press the unlock button on the center dash or the key fob.

no option available...... i had mine turned off.
if you would only have to pull the handle once (i.e. VW) to get out that would be fine with me.
but couldn't get in the habit of hittin' the button when i stopped so i just gave up.

I like the double clutch unlock on BMWs. I guess I got used to it after 11 years but still it is a useful feature esp. when you have kids. You guys will get used to it.

I absolutely cannot stand cars that lock when you start driving. It's THE most annoying new feature in years, IMO.

I agree it used to annoy me, but when you 't have kids in the back of a 4 door car, it is very useful esp. combined with the double clutch to open, gives you a bit of warning when a kid tries to open the door. Anyway this is not a new feature, American cars have had it for as far as I remember renting them, at least BMW gives you the option to turn it off.

If you're worried about kids opening the door, there's a little latch inside the door jam which allows you to set it so that the door can not be opened from the inside.

I know about that one, it is on for the little one. I am more worried about the older kids who I want to be able to open the door on their own but don't want them to be able to do it quickly enough before I can react (e.g. opening a door too close to another car).

Another reason to buy a coupe. My six-year-old has absolutely no chance of opening the door while we are moving.

lmao. Yeah that was one advantage of having my 318ti (2 door, or 3 if you want to be picky), but then after they grow up, you really get fedup having to let them in and out, so I opted for 4 door, plus the wife nagging all the time we need a 4 door doesn't help :(. I am a coupe guy at heart but pragmatism necessitates otherwise. I think we may have strayed too much from the OP question.

Just curious, but why? I actually like this new feature that's become standard over the past 10 years or so and I don't see the downside.

As I said it used to, mainly because I wasn't used to it and the rental made me feel I was not in control of whether I want the doors locked or not. I have since learned "the way" and esp. as I said with the kids thing came to appreciate it and appreciate that BMW allowed me to turn it off if I so desired. No complaints here anymore.

Get used to saying "Pull it one more time" to your passengers.

My passengers usually figure it on their own ;).

Because if I want the doors locked, I'll lock them. I see no reason to lock them during driving.

I don't really understand this. Why would your kid open a door while the car is moving?

No worries, to each their own! Either BMW has a reason that they think it's a good idea to do it, or else they are just "following the herd" on this new feature.

There's often no rational reason for people to demand a new feature on a car. Witness the plethora of cupholders in many vehicles, or many folks' insistence upon AWD on their cars in the northeast.

I guess I didn't explain it clearly, I meant while stopped. If you are parked too close to another car, kids don't have the presence of mind to look first judge distance then open the door carefully. They just open the door right away, all the way and sometime with froce, so this gives me a bit of time to tell them be careful, open it slowly. I am guessing you don't have young kids, otherwise you'd know what I am talking about ;).

I agree. On that note, did you know that more than 40% of BMWs sold in the US are AWD while in Germany it is just 3.3%!!!!! :confused

Yeah mine are still a few years away from that maturity level, can't wait, but then those years come with their own set of problems :mad.
