View Full Version : I need a job

I desperately need a job waiting tables as a second source of income. Anyone who has friends at a restaurant in the seacoast NH area, or works at one, or knows someone that owns one, or feels that they could help me with this in any way, let me know. I don't have a whole lot of experience (~a year), but you need to work to get it, and I'm definitely motivated and learn quickly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would walk into any place I could see myself working at, and ask for an application. Goto enough of them, and someone will hire.

Check out the Asia in Newington. A work friend just picked up a job there on the weekends for extra money and she makes bank for what she works. Fridays, she works about 3-4 hours, and gets around 50 bucks. That's better then my GF who works (And who has worked for years) @ applebees....making like 30 in a 5 hour shift.
Fire it up bro!

Tim,
I worked at Applebees throughout college. I did put in my time and waited/cooked/bartended but I'll tell you that on some Fri/Sat nights I'd leave with $200 in my pocket. Even a 1st cut weeknight shift could make $50 (closers make closer to $100+).
There is one in epping now as well as the one in Newington/Portsmouth.
Not sure if I still know the managers or not but if you have previous waiting experience and explain that you are willing to do any night shifts, weekend day shifts, whatever as well as the fact that you are planning on being in the area for a while you'll probably get in.
I worked in 'nicer' places as well but I always went back to applebees. Had lots of fun there, made more money there than nice table cloth stuff as well.
The other option is that I'm very good friends with the owner of Fat Belly's in portsmouth. I could make a call there. Are you 21 yet? Do you know anything about bartending?

That's the route that I'm thinking of, I had a ton of fun working at Friday's last summer (in Cape Cod). I'll run up to the Applebee's in Newington sometime this week and see what happens. Supposedly Chiangmai Thai in Portsmouth hires people with little esperience as well.
I'll be 21 in October, but I would appreciate any opportunities that Fat Bellies may be able to afford. Do they hire barbacks? I don't know a whole lot about bartending, but I am very willing to learn.
Brandon, I'll check out Asia, thanks for the tip. Supposedly Szechuan Taste in Exeter hires non-Asians as servers too.

If you worked at a Fridays go to Fridays in Newington. They should hire you...

Hmmm... I was there 2001 (summer) to 2002 (fall) then again 2005ish for a stint (the one in Newington).
I've worked at applebees in the following places 1 day or more:
Hamilton, OH
Middleton, OH
Manchester, NH
Hooksett, NH
Somersworth, NH
Portland, ME
Newington, NH
From the summer of 2000 to like Fall of 2005 (or maybe Spring 2006). In newington I worked with TC, Mike Putty, Ariana, etc. There was a Missi there my second time around when Danielle Duvarney and Skomersky, and that crew was there (Scott ..... the manager). Oh and the bisnatch Kelly the AGM who I think now is the GM.
Tim, as an FYI the reason I was all over the place was that I could run the kitchen on a Friday/Saturday Evening with a 3 man line (usually they have a 6 man line on those nights) I was trained in Manchester by some ridiculous cooks and learned some interesting things. For those that have worked at those places Applebees has three stations (broil, mid, fry). Portsmouth can do $1500 - $2000 hours (which is ALOT) on those nights.
Thanks to being able to hop on any station in the kitchen on a night and work it along without getting in the "weeds" it enabled me to have special "priveleges". The moral of the story isn't to say how good I was and brag the moral of the story is this.
Get into the kitchen. Learn a station, learn it well. Also ask to wait a couple times. They ALWAYS need help in the kitchen. On some Friday's I would be scheduled to work on the floor (waiting) but would be asked to cook. I was also scheduled to work the floor Saturday night. What I would do is say "sure I'll work in the kitchen tonight" which was guaranteed $14 an hour for 8 hours (better than a crappy 1st cut waiting shift) and I'd say "but if I work in the kitchen tonight I want to pick my section tomorrow night". Then I'd pick the bar tops for Sat night and make bank.
Some of the other waitstaff hated it, but some were ok with it because without someone jumping in the kitchen that Friday night a manager would have to. Scott is the only manager EVER that could take "the heat". Normally managers crash and burn on the line.
Szechuan Taste pays good as well

Friday's is most likely not an option (though I wish it was) because I was fired unfairly due to some "differences" with an assistant manager, not at all related to my performance. What sucks is it has made it very difficult to get a new restaurant job, because though I did well at my old job, I got fired for a bs reason. Restaurant politics ftl.
I'll go to Applebee's tonight or tomorrow and see if I can make something happen. I have some experience in the kitchen, and enough in FOH. I really need to put myself in a position to make money. I make enough to pay the bills now, but not much to save, or give myself some sort of cushion in the case that something were to happen.
Szechuan Taste would be FTW, I could bike to both jobs :D

Yup, I was "Howie" in the applebees world. I remember it was indeed Missi's first year. She was pretty damn cool. She got to listen to me when I got dumped by Steph and how bummed I was. Man was I a little "off" for a while.
I'm sure Kelly is still a wicked Douche. Is Missi still working there?
Oh and yeah she saw my E46 before 'major' modifications and then my E30 when I first got it in Rust bucket form.

Dude, I'd just go to Applebee's on an afternoon that Missi is there and a good manager is there and talk to them.
Just explain that you have experience at a Friday's in the Cape but you can't give it as a reference because you left on bad terms. Just make it sound like you chose to leave. Tell them that you are not eligible for rehire. You don't have to explain a damn thing.
Just be honest about the situation. All they can do is verify that yes you worked there and no you are not eligibile for rehire.
Give Volvo as a reference. Give the CC as a reference. Hopefully Missi can talk you up.
Just be like, "Listen, I'm a hard worker, let me prove myself, I WANT this job."
That is all it usually takes. Tell them you are working two jobs to save up to go back to school. When you have enough $$ to go back to school you are quitting your day job but will want to keep you restaurant job and you'll be there a few years easy. They want to know someone is going to stay for a bit.
If you think it'll help say you have kitchen experience too.
Just be upfront (but don't share details) and energetic. And go there between 2pm and 4pm so they know you understand the restaurant business.

Basically I got fired because the AGM didn't like me. She had a major attitude problem towards anyone who wasn't one of her favorites, especially men. I took 3 days off immediately after xmas (the 29th to the 31st) because I had to go home and see my brother, who was home from college (he goes to school in MI and I hadn't seen him since August). I didn't have much notice, but I did get all of my shifts covered. The AGM fired me because I hadn't written it in the schedule book, and was therefore no call no show for 3 days. These were the only days I had missed in my entire time working there, and I was late less than 3 times (I always called to tell them), each time being no more than a few minutes. I had no infractions, and had never once been written up. So I doubt I would have any chance of fighting this, which is why I didn't pursue it.
Worst part is there were employees there who were consistently late or did not show up at all, and several employees who were known to be doing coke on the property during business hours. Many of these employees still have their jobs.

this is the detail that you need to leave out. Although I have a question: Although you didn't write it in the switch book did the people that said they were going to cover your shifts cover your shifts? If that is the case you technically are not a no call no show. But if they didn't cover your shifts it is on you as a no call no show and thus they have grounds to fire you.
Not worth suing them over but it is worth it applying to Fridays and telling THEM that story if you had people cover for you.
"Gee Mr. Friday's manager I REALLY want to work here again. I absolutely loved working here. this is what happened at my other restaurant and I've always been afraid to try to get a job here but THIS is the place I want to work."
That could work at a Fridays if the people that said they were going to cover actually did cover.
Now even if that is the case DO NOT share that with applebees (or elsewhere). Just be aloof. "Yes I left. No it wasn't on good terms. I really don't want to talk about it. The AGM and I did not see eye to eye. I've never worked for a more unethical person in my life."
Usually when you bring ethics into it and say you weren't raised in a manner that you could agree with your manager's decisions people interviewing you will look more favorably upon you.

Personally, if someone f'ed me over like that I would seek revenge, maybe get her fired. Or send complaints to Fridays constantly about her place, and her attitude as manager. Karma will catch up with her anyway probably.

Well it depends on the position you have in the parts department. Are you working the counter? Billing out parts on ROs? Maybe they do not offer bonuses there. All the parts departs I worked I recieved a monthly bonus which was based of the total parts sales. Usually it takes 30 days for it to start.

The one I'm working now, basically the parts counter.
What kinda bonus are we talkin?
It all depends on the company. I really do not know what the percentage was. I know my bonuses were between 800 and 1200 a month when I was working at Port City Nissan.

Dude...if you say "I've worked at Friday's, IHOP and The Muddy River, all for about 2 years" You'll get a job. There is no need to go into why you left.

And when they check those referrences? They're gonna train me no matter what so I might as well just go on my TGIF experience.

Yes I was hourly. You have to remember Port City Nissan is twice as large as Wentworth Volvo and Nissan sells 3 times as many cars as Volvo does.

True that. I'd rather work at a different dealership (Ira?) but my benefits just kicked in :(

Tim, just go hit up some restaurants. Apply to all the chains in Portsmouth.
If you go to Outback this girl Candie may still be a manager. Tell her "howie from applebees" suggested you go talk to her. She worked with me in like 2002 and I think she went to Outback and became an AGM or GM even.
If you go to Fat Belly's ask for Hansen. Tell him Howard sent you. I'll try to give him a call. Not sure if he needs any help though.

Okay I'm off to the dentist, and from there, Applebee's. I'll hit up the other chains later tonight.

Filled out an app, and spoke to both Scott and Kelly. Kelly told me that I need to do 2 more interviews, and that I should hear from them some time in the next few days.
I'm gonna head back up to Newington/Portsmouth tonight after the dinner rush ends.
