View Full Version : Carbon Fiber hood for wide grill?

I searched and found a few threads on a Erubini narrow grill CF hood and a few threads on a possible GB on CF wide grill hoods but nothing ever came of them.
My white touring has a funky dent on the hood that my PDR guy said would require a new hood anyway. I saw a few pictures of Alpine white e39 tourings with CF hoods and thought I should consider going that route on my white e34 touring.
Any leads appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew

So there's a group buy to spend a ton of money on ugly pignosed wide hoods? Ew, keep it.

...go old skool...thermoplastic or fiberglass tastefully painted...it's probably just me (being in Florida)...but every go-fast-kiddy here has a ricer with carbon hood and stainless enema (but nothing faster than a Yugo on steroids)...

well i don't see too many of those options out there either and carbon fiber will be sturdier than fg... not too sure about thermoplastic. If there as any lighter option that wasn't going to be insanely costly due to being a one-off i would do it. I was planning on painting it but looks aren't really what I care about with my car. Hell I want a rear decklid as well.

I agree.
The new m3 likes carbon fiber (roof). ;)
I use to own a nissan 240sx. I thought it was done tastefully (with partially painted carbon fiber hood...check image). It's hard to tell... it's a vented cf hood. The middle section of the hood was left unpainted.
If you're building your e34 for performance, or even just an extra oomph, lightening your car is one of the few options we have in getting these cars moving. What would be cool is if you wanted to save weight & get a little more performance, is replace your roof with a cf roof.

I'm kind of ick when it comes to the look of the new M3...it's a little too Racer-Kiddy for my tastes...but unlike most of the Bangled Bimmers I really like the new 3 overall...and seeing they're now damned near as big inside and out as our E34s I kinda want a 335i...

Inside? Have you seen them parked next to an E36 or E46? Theyre GIANT on the outside as well.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. I'm not a cf fan however i needed a hood and got a great deal on this so whatever.
Fitment is suprisingly awsome.
Also weights almost exactly half of what the stocker weights according to my trusty bathroom scale.
Stock approx 45lbs
CF approx 25lbs

Hum, the hood looks nice but do we know any specifics on it? Is it a fiberglass with carbon overlay or is it a wet carbon lay up is there a similar support frame as the OEM piece or does it use some sort of core also what type of resin system is it? Just curious because nick (green 540i) and I do carbon work and if you leave it unpainted the resin may not stand up to the UV rays or even if you plan on painting it because you dont want the "look" and you want it to look OEM or better you have to do quite a bit to get a good finish depending on what type of method and carbon you use of course. Either way just questions and not intending to put it down!

I am worried its not a good mold and is wavy so if painted it might look a little turd.
......as long as the plug/parent part was perfect and the mold maker was on his
A' game, the hoods should fit well. That also has alot to do with the sandwich construction and if it was post cured with heat.
CF can be prepped and painted just like any fiberglass or metal part. The MAIN concerns are..
1)-Don't buy Polyester resin parts for outdoor exposure.
2)-Whats the point in body working and adding weight to a CF product ?
3)- a true CF complete hood would weigh in around 13-15 pounds bolt-on.
4)-To be robust for outdoors and UV stable...it needs to be built with Vinylester resin(UV stable),rolled edges for factory look, clearcoated with automotive Eurothanes over the clear gelcoat.
Hope this helps. I have a extra narrow hood awaiting the day to build the mold for full CF hoods. I'm just slow as hell getting to new projects with my work schedules.:rolleyes
I figured there is only about 3-4 of us here on the boards who would justify the cost of a full CF construction anyway.:evil2

Yeah bump. I like your whole setup Lee. I almost got a CF hood from some sketchy guy selling a "golden beamer". Still considering getting one, just don't want to take away from the more "serious" classic E34 look just to lose 20 LBS.

This is true.....but if its made from Polyester resins, there is a high probability that the CF and fiberglass weave will show print through. This is a condition of Texture of the cloth showing through . You can actually feel it.
It may require several more than average coats of primer to hide it well. And then...there is no guarantee it won't print through again later on due to heat, sun, chemical reactions to newly sprayed paints etc.
A Vinylester built hood won't do this.
Just trying to inform..........or.:help

There is ZERO Polyester resin in an F40. Or fiber E/S glass for that matter. They used pre-impregnated Autoclaved cured CF's.
Which subsequentually would make our hoods cost about 5K if made in that process. They would be 100% CF and Kevlar/CF hybrids.
That process,by the way...is commonly referred to as "Dry Carbon'. And its expected to show and feel of the weave's texture due to using the least amount of resin possible for a light strong race part.

Oh yes...I recall now. Thanks for posting the link.:). I was amazed back when I first saw this hoods construction with all the raw edges, 40 grit scratches and such.
Granted they were for race only and expected to be painted....but damn:eek:...it looked rough.
I could tell that their air duct was a INSERT rather than built into the mold. Not so hot.
It is true that some of the under structure could be removed due to full CF being SO ridgid.

I'd at least get a quote from a Paintless Dent pro and go from there. I can't imagine going CF as an affordable "Temp" fix for anything really.:confused

Lol...:stickoutt:rolleyes...that should tell the stort right there. 2K in paint prep on a hood screams LOTS of high build prime and 40 hours hand sanding. No thanks.
Even in full CF...if the molds are proper....you can do the top and sub structure in clear gel coats and have no need for any additional finish work to hide flaws or joints.
It just requires alot more work upfront via the plug and molds.

you might want to get coilovers before you start taking off that much wait on one end of the car. After market suspension is set for full weight cars.
