View Full Version : Dead Ignition Coil Pack?

Hello Fellas,

My room mate has a 1998 318i stick shift with about 115k miles on it. It's had a check engine light on since he bought it, it's only recently started to cause problems. I would imagine that light was on for something else up until recently (resetting the O2 sensor?) because it never did anything like this until a short while ago. But then again, i guess it could have been a slowly deteriorating part that just finally went AWOL.

In the past few days its started running quite roughly, and now it's almost undrivable. It's died on him while idling and what not. He took it by OReilly's to have the codes read, and it said all 4 cylinders were misfiring, and it also threw up a code for a bad coil pack sensor.

Now that's not an extremely expensive part, but at $160, I'd like to see if there are other things that could be checked/replaced first, to save some cash. I'm not that familiar with the M44 engine or the ignition setup on those computer-controlled cars, so I don't have many suggestions. Do yall have anything to add?
