View Full Version : Are aftermarket parts better than BMW parts?

So, I just recently purchased a 2008 335i sedan. I really enjoy working on my cars, but I was wondering if aftermarket parts are better than the ones BMW uses (since this is my first BMW). I’m talking about very general parts like intercooler, thermostat, exhaust, air intake, etc. Disregard the performance aspect of aftermarket products, and focus on the quality and endurance. So, while they may be better for performance, are the parts overall better for your car, or does it just depend on the brand? If it depends on the brand of the parts, what brand should I look for, and which should I stay away from? Thoughts, suggestions?

Cheers,
M

not sure if they are better or not, but one thing to keep in mind is that most, if not all, aftermarket parts will void your warranty (on related components) at least as far as BMW claims. BMW parts won't as they are endorsed and tested by BMW. If performance is the same, I personally would go with the BMW gear even at a little added cost just for the peace of mind and not having to fight the dealer and BMW in case something goes wrong and warranty claims are denied. I realize this is a clever strategy by BMW to get you to buy their stuff, but why not if their stuff is as good and not much more expensive.

Thanks, that makes alot of sense. Last thing I want to do is void the warranty on a brand new car. I was looking at bmwusa.com, and checking out their section on 'parts and accessories,' but other than a few things like suspension and carbon fiber parts, there isn't too much more for performance parts. Is there somewhere else I should be looking, if I was looking to upgrade things such as exhaust, intercooler, etc? I didn't start working on my last car till it was out of warranty, so this is something new I need to pay attention to :)

They are introducing a whole new performance parts catalogue. Someone posted a link a while ago, do a search on the forum and you should find it.
