If I put some "jap" wheels on my M5?

I'm thinking 17" Rays TE37s or maybe some D-Force wheels. With spacers, obviously. I've always liked the look of the TE37s on BMWs.

Or should I just stick with an OE BMW wheel?

The TE37s would be 17x8.5 +42 and 17x9.5 +42 with a 20 or 25mm spacer. The D-Forces are 18x9 +41 or 18x10 +43 with probably a 20mm spacer in the front and a 25mm spacer in the rear.

D-Force LTW-5 (these are cast)

Rays TE37 (these are forged)

Another option is Enkei's NT03+M which are also cast but I might be able to get for a good deal because I have a relationship with Enkei. (they sponsor my Evo)

That's the problem, fitments for the E34s are few and far between. It's like all the wheel companies assume every BMW owner has either a E36-E9X 3-series or wants giant 19-22" gaudy chrome wheels.

Just found out Advan (made by Enkei) has the RS available in 18x9.5 +25

http://www.cca.cc/nexus/RS.jpg

Would have to do non-staggered then, though.

I'll have to ask my import shop how much custom Rays will be though. Have to be $$$$. Enkei would make me a custom fitment but I'd have to order like an ungodly amount to make it work lol.

My opinion (meaning that it's of value only to me, you might think I'm way off) is that the style is more important than where the wheels are actually made (assuming quality in manufacturing).

There are many "Japanese style" wheels that do fit the appearance of a BMW... and there are also many German-made wheels which look horrible. Also, a basic thing - chrome. Ugh. I want to run chrome-shod BMWs off the road and burn the carcasses that remain inside.

You can look through the entire Genuine BMW wheel catalog and there are some real stinkers... 3-spokers that belong on a Hyundai, etc:

http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/wheels/BMWWheels.htm

This is genuine BMW, but hideous:

http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/wheels/bmw_wheel_038.jpg

Wedsport is a company similar to Volk, yet not as well known in the US. Pricing and quality are similar, and I think it looks darn good on this E30:

http://www.robertlevinson.com/325iX_wedsport/images/img_8379.jpg
Amusingly enough, this wheel is now discontinued... yet it appears that Wedsport may be making them as OEM for Honda, as found on top-line Civics now! :D

The D-Force wheels are a basic, simple design that does not scream "Japanese" or "German"... they would look good on just about any sporty car:

http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/d-force/E46_3.jpg (http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/d-force/)

The one interesting thing about style that often amuses me is how little things do not work, such as mis-matched bolt count and spoke count. A 5-spoke wheel with a 4-bolt fitment? Doesn't fit. 6-spoke with 5-bolt? Also doesn't fit. 5-spoke with 5-bolt? Aaahh, aesthetic serenity. 6-spoke with 4-bolt? Divides up evenly, nothing to aggravate the eye.

what do these wheels weight, vs what you have. Loosing 10lbs or more per corner really makes the car feel lighter.

ok, now i can see what we're talking about.

i think all of them would work, but personally i think the wheels you have today look the best. but no, i don't think anyone will lynch you. if everybody listened to the most frequent posts we'd all be riding lower, on style 5's, with clear corners. where's the fun when everybody's the same.

I have no idea what these Folgers weigh, but if I had to guess based on similar 2/3-piece style wheels I'd imagine they are no less than 25-30lbs. All of the wheels I'm looking at are less than 20lbs, with the TE37s being the lightest (probably around 15lbs each) since they are forged.

My dad is a huge fan of M-pars since he had a '98 E38 740iL with the sport package for awhile. They're a good looking rim but they are getting too played out between the E34s and E38s. Same with the Style 5s. Heck, my '95 E38 740iL has Style 5s stock! LOL

I'm just looking to do something different. There's lots of advantages to running Japanese-style wheels.

Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for the NT03+Ms. Some people don't like them, but I think they're pretty hot.

BUT! News flash! I just found that Rays has TE37s available in 18x8.5 +15 and 18x9.5 +22 for E60 5-er fitment! Those would work with new hubcentric rings, right?

They also have the CE28N in the same fitment!

And the RE30 comes in a 18x9.5 +25 and 18x10.5 +25 (E46 M3 fitment)!

Are the Folgers you guys are talking about the same wheels Justin (RedFive) has on his 535GTR? I'm trying to decide between them and BBS RC or RX. I actually do like (those ^) Japanese style wheels on the E34. Because the E34 is the most race-bred 5, it can pull them off with plenty of class left over.

SWEET! Is +15 in the front too aggressive? There's a note on it that says on the E60 it will interfere with the front fender. No idea how much though. I've seen other people running offsets that aggressive on the E34 with no problems though, so should I be worried?

Fascinating! So that opens up the whole E60 wheel catalogue also. I don't intend to skip that many generations with OEM E60 wheels, but some after-market companies only sell 5 series wheels E39 and up...

Are those the ones you're talking about? If so the centers look the same as mine but the edges are quite a bit different. On his the center curves into the rim and ends before the bolts that attach the center to the rim, on mine the center goes all the way to the rim and has recessed holes for the bolts. Like I said, slightly different but very similar otherwise.

Here's a closeup of mine so you can see. Also, his have a stepped lip, mine do not.

You can special order your TE-37s to any specs probably take like 4-5 months shipping time tho. Totally worth the wait and they rock on any car.
So if you don't find a size of your likings you can always order it. Friend ordered 19s x 10.5 offset of 13 =O

Speedline made a wheel similar to mine that has the bolts embedded like yours but there is more bend to the center section. My wheels are 18x9.5 and 18x11. When I got the wheels they were in terrible shape, but had them restored to their glory. But the one thing I did different was the center section. I had that powder coated a darker shade of silver in order for the look to pop more. I think you should keep your wheels and do that, because that would look really nice on the Alpine, IMO. BTW your car looks great.

OK, I think I found the perfect wheel.

SSR Professor MS1, probably an 18x9 front and 18x10 rear. Haven't figured out lip/offset yet but a full set custom made for your car is only around $2500! And they look sweet:

http://www.more-japan.com/skin1/images/SSR/SSR/ms1/wheel02.jpg

Another option is the Professor VE1 which has the same custom fitments:

http://www.more-japan.com/skin1/images/SSR/SSR/vf1/wheel02.jpg

http://www.more-japan.com/SSR_vf1.php

The SSR Type-C can also be had in 18x8.5 +22 and 18x9.5 +22, if I wanted to go that route. After living with these Folgers on the car for awhile now something about a deep lip is really calling to me. That's why I'm also considering some 18" Style 5s.
