what do the brown wires do, on the brake light switch?
I replaced the switch, but the brake light circuit warning still comes on. Bulbs are sylvania 7506 LL, brand new all 3 of them.

brown is ground on german cars.

right, but what is being grounded? it is not the ground for the brake lights, as they turn on just fine if you connect only the colored wires (and leave the brown ones disconnected).

in fact, if I connect only the colored wires to the switch, the "Brake Light Circuit" warning goes away. would disconnecting them be dangerous? maybe they tell the airbags how to deploy in an accident, based on if you are braking or not? or something else? any ideas?

You are right I think!!! makes the most sense. And this car has cruise control too. Thanks!
I'm guessing cruise control will not work if I leave it disconnected. Not a safety risk, I guess.
Wonder why it triggers the "brake light circuit" warning? Hmmmm
