my 92 525i has 6 front speakers, none of which have worked since i bought the car. I dont know a whole lot about car audio but i pulled out the aftermarket sony head unit and everything seems to be connected correctly. Of course the first thing i did was try to adjust the fade on the head unit and when its set all the way to the front the back still plays and nothing from the front. The factory amp is still installed in the trunk but i dont know how to tell if its still wired. I'm thinking maybe the previous owner bypassed the amp and hooked up only the back speakers but i dunno how to tell. circuit city wants to charge me 60 dollars for a diagnosis but id hate to give away money for something one of you guys could probably help me with. please let me know if you have any ideas.

Does your aftermarket headunit have an adaptor plug to directly into the factory harness or did someone do a hack job?

they cut the wires and rigged it up. all of the wires are hooked up though.

check the speaker connections. pull the panels and check if they're ok.

I would definitely check the wiring job. I have seen some pretty hacked up stuff. The may have not even wired in those speakers correctly. If you need new speakers let me know as I am parting out a 94 e34 and I know the stereo works along with the speakers.

Have a look at the stock amp; it's in the trunk on the left hand side inside the "wall" that you can remove. Take a pic perhaps if you can.
The first time I installed a replacement head unit, I cut wires instead of going for an adaptor harness, and the results were pretty iffy. Though all channels were playing, fiddling with fader and balance yielded strange results. It didn't play too well all centered either. That head unit was stolen (no great loss) and I replaced it with a better one, repluged the original harness and bought an adaptor. No problem since.
The thing is that the BMW factory speakers are wired in a strange way where they are not grounded back to the amp - or something like that.

You gotta connect the amp wire to the remote wire from the deck probably. Sounds like the amp isn't getting a signal to turn on. I had the same problem when i fist wired my deck i believe.
